Me and Mastereagle headed out to a place we just got permission to detect that promised to be an absolute treasure haven. Mastereagle was positively VIBRATING with the idea that we could hunt there. (It was kind of like a small earthquake actually.) :laughing9:

I left work and wasted no time; headed home to change shirts and I was off to the site. I took no more than five minutes at my house and although Mastereagle was still at work when I left, he beat me to the site. :cussing: By the time I arrived, Mastereagle had already geared up and was standing by his car waiting on me. It’s like he had a transporter. :icon_scratch:

We begin detecting and dig the usual aluminum siding and pulltabs and not much else is coming up. We were getting concerned we were going to get skunked when I moved out close to the road. A couple of feet from the corner of the lot, I got a “warbled” sound. When I opened the ground, there was this huge tree root the size of my arm. I removed all the dirt on both sides and went to digging around the root. Finally, out comes this little Sterling Monogrammed locket about the size of a nickel. It looked super old and had a script “M” in the middle of the lid. Awesome find. :headbang:

Marked with Webster Sterling Mark – Some History on this:
The Webster Company was originally founded by George K. Webster in 1869 in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Their line of sterling items included over 20 patterns of dresser sets, picture frames, cigarette holders, bowls, baby items, candlesticks, napkin rings and more. They were primarily manufacturers of sterling items, however they did have a small line of silver plate items. In 1958, they purchased the Frank W. Smith Silver Co. and today the Webster Co. is part of Reed & Barton Silversmiths.

Mastereagle goes on hunting and grumbling and finally I think he is having a Heart Attack!! I look over there and thought he had bitten by something. (You know that furry thing on movies that runs out from under couches and attacks people…..and you never know what it is?? That’s what I thought had bitten him). He was leaping around and saying “Woh..woh…Oh my Gawd!” He was holding his hands tightly together as if something was wrong with his finger. I then realized, he had found something good. I discovered it was a token from an Old Bakery in this town from probably around the early 1900’s. The Bakery is long since gone.

I continued my Silver Streak by digging this earring marked “Sterling” a few minutes later:

We finished the night with a couple of wheats and other various things from another property up the road, but not much else to report as far as finds go. I couldn’t wait to get home and open the locket and see what was inside. I broke my own rule and got anxious to open it before it was clean and you know what happened….yep, the hinge breaks. :angry4: I know better than that!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back at home, I decided to wash up the locket. I noticed it was really heavy and it seems deeper than the interior suggest, but being clean, I laid it aside. My wife walks up there and says, “Hey this thing has something in it”. I get to looking and what appeared to be the base inside, is actually a wheat penny stack(?) I can tell there are several and the top one is a 1914! I can’t tell if the coins underneath are wheat pennies or possibly Indian Head Pennies. They are all Copper though. I worked last night for over an hour to get that top coin out, and they must have forced it in a little….it just isn’t coming out easy. I would appreciate any suggestions, for I fear I may explode if I don’t know what the other coins are!

I managed two Wheats also (1941 and 1957D):

Also found this junker plated pendant. The other thing is a light bulb base.

Baldingboy I think they only made 8 '43 copper pennies. What are you soaking that thing in?

btw- I read that atf and acetone makes an excellent penetrating solvent. :read2:

Awesome day! And very cool hidden treasures in the locket!

I'm no expert but maybe soak in warm/hot water for a couple hours?

That earring is super. Is it enamel? Kind of looks like turquoise in the pics. Nice stuff!

Congrats

calisdad~ Boy..that whole 43 Copper thing flew right over my head. :-\ I don't have it soaking in anything right now. Are you serious about acetone? I know it is used to prepare metal for paint among other things, so that might work to de-crud those coins and assist with their removal. :dontknow:

heepiepow~ It really was an awesome day. I am going to try soaking it in hot water, and maybe even try putting it in the freezer if that doesn't work. I though about taking it to a jeweler to see if he could warm the silver enough to get them out. I know a guy local that probably wouldn't charge too much. The earring was super nice. It is turquoise mounted in Sterling Silver and is super nice. Maybe I should get my ear pierced and start wearing it. :dontknow: :sign10:

Nutriasub~ Yeah, I love it too. We just don't find stuff like this often enough, do we?

Yea man that locket is way cool!

If it IS a 43, BB is going to be buying me a STEAK!!!!! I'm hungry!

birdman~ Thanks. Appreciate it.

Quite Right , that locket is VERY K 8) 8) L CMD

Ignoring the coins for the moment; this isn't your average locket shape. Does the lid look like it would hold a pic, or is it a compact, snuff box, mourning locket etc.? :icon_scratch: I'm really interested in its shape, as well as the treasures it holds.

Keep us posted!

BB I just read recently that atf (Automatic transmission fluid) mixed with acetone worked better than Liquid Wrench in freeing up rusted nuts and bolts.

You might dip a piecs of silver in it first to test for discoloration.

good luck-

CMDiamonddawg~ Thanks man.

Tigger~ It is some kind of compact or snuff box I believe. It is about 4 pennies deep and ball like in the interior. The lid has a cracked mirror affixed to the inside. I will post a couple more pics tonight so you can see it.

calisdad~ I am beginning to think you are in cahoots with Mastereagle and just having fun with me. The coins are loose in the locket; they just are slightly larger than the opening and won't pass through since you can't get a hold of them. I don't think they need to be loosened. When you put something like tweezers inside to grasp a coin, the opening is a bit smaller than the coin and you don't have room for the tool and the coin which is already too big. The coin can't be tilted much either because of the coins underneath. The only way I see it coming out is by modifying the locket opening is some manner. :(

Ahhhh. I think some of us were in the mistaken belief they were adhered to the bottom.

Don't you dare! Do you wanna post it in "What is it" to get more brainstorming on how to remove them? Do you have a jeweler to take it to (he can repair the hinge too!)

I guess I wasn't completely clear on the coins not being stuck to the locket. They do move freely. I think that before I would modify the locket in any way I would just leave the coins alone. I am not comfortable doing anything too outlandish to get them out. I will probably take it to a jeweler and see what he suggests.

OK- I thought they were stuck to the locket too. That's why I suggested cold/hot 'therapy'. I'd be soaking it in a lubricating solvent. If you alter the locket in any way--- well-- you just might have to change your identity. :laughing7:

Is the mirror glass? What a cool find. Still think you don't save ordinary coins. Hopefully dissimilar ones don't cause electrolisis and weld them together.

They could very well be totally boring pennies. From a girl's point of view, you might save one with your birth year, your boyfriend/hubby's birth year, or the years your children were born...
I recently gave my hubby a penny from the year we were married - 'look honey, at what I got in change today!' totally missed the significance. it's a girl thing?

calisdad~ Yeah, I think ALL of the coins are moving independently in there. I'm pretty sure. I am also pretty sure they are all coppers, so I don't see any of them really welding together....hopefully. The mirror is glass and has cracks all through it.

Tigger~ I hope this locket was from a woman who lost it and had coins that weren't ordinary. I have feeling your closer to the mark though. I feel that a kid probably shoved those pennies in there and wanted them out and then beat the locket on something to dislodge them. I think that is where the dings in the back came from. They probably gave up and tossed it. Probably just coins from the day and nothing special.....but what if??? :icon_sunny:

BB do you have or have access to calipers? I'd measure the outside diameter of a penny then measure the locket opening in several places. A penny that might not come out in the 12 oclock 6 oclock position might come out in the 9 oclock 3 oclock position. Kinda of like those old puzzles we had as kids.

I noticed there are some lockets called poison lockets. With a mirror inside this must be a vanity locket so the person who owned it could look inside and see the person she loved the most. :laughing9:

calisdad~ That's a good idea. I don't have calipers though. :-\ I think that will be a technique I will try if the jeweler is unable to guarentee me the safety of the locket and contents in and effort to remove them.

I was showing the locket to my mother tonight and she proclaimed it to be a rouge pot. She said it would have had makeup in it and the little mirror is to look into while applying it. She stated that a simple locket would not have been deep and the shape of a pot. :dontknow:

I shaking and examining the locket more closely, I was able to identify the second coin in there as another Wheat Penny. So at least I know what the next coin will be if I am able to remove the top one. It is face down and I could plainly see the wheat sheaf peeking around the edge of the top coin.

I still have not managed to get the coins freed from the locket. I am going to take it to a jeweler tomorrow.

that locket is a gem!!!!! MR TUFF
