Most of the article is behind a subscription firewall, but we get the picture.

As an example of people throwing away change, a local convenience store employee, near my previous residence, had the honor of removing trash from the small parking area while on her shift. Between $300 and $400 was pocketed monthly, in addition to her $18/hr wages.

Time for more coffee.

Some of those aren’t even US coins. I spotted a 50 euro cent and a token in there. I do have a story: I was in a bank using the coin machine, and went to dump my wrappers in the trash. To my surprise, there were coins in there! I got a British new penny, a Canadian dime and about 70 cents US. I suspect that they were rejected by the machine, and the person must have thought that they were fake or something. I also have found coins on top of the trash at the grocery store. Their loss, my gain!
