This little guy was in the road

I saw this painted turtle sunbathing in the middle of the road today and figured I better move him. I put him in the back of the truck and took him about 5 miles down the road to Crosswinds Marsh and found a good spot to set him down. He sat there awhile until he figured he was safe and then hit the water. I got a few more pics before I left. This turtle was living in ditches beside the road I think. I bet he thinks he is in turtle heaven now.

Seriously though, I am not one usually to mess with Ma' Nature but I know that certain turtle species, including the painted, are experiencing declining numbers. This is in large part due to turtles ending up as road kill. I did consider, briefly , whether or not I should move the turtle due to nearby family, but every time I have seen a painted turtle , it was alone. So, I resigned myself to the belief that Painteds do not mate for life. After reading your post, I decided to look it up, rather than just stating my belief. Sure enough, they do not mate for life. So, all is well in turtle world.

I have been seeing these all over the roads lately - only a couple have been squished. Every year around this time they hit the roads. Travelin' men I guess...
