just a j?

I can't think of what it would mean in the military

I think it is simply a flat button with environmental damage that looks like a 'J'.

The "J" is not environmental. I try to rub it off. It is definitely a "J".

Doesn't look like pewter and I don't see a J. I'm saying normal old civilian button as well.

Neat very old button that may date back to the 18th century. The J is way off center and appears to be a casting irregularity or a later ding. I'm afraid the J stands for "Just a damaged coin button", but still a very nice find.

Looks like a plain Tombac button to me.
