Back in 1995-1997 I worked in a pizza shop after school. Once a week or so, an older lady would drive up outside and honk the horn for "the usual" (two slices of sicilian, and a child size soda). When I would take it back out to her, she would ALWAYS pay and tip with coins...old coins! Needless to say, I had quite a little collection going by the time 1997 rolled around. Here it is for your viewing pleasure! I hadn't looked through these since 1997.

Wow! Wish people paid me or tipped me in silver. Nevermind OLD Silver!
Congratulations!

sweet deal. I keep thinking about doing that sometime, tipping in silver with a tiny note to let the person know exactly what they are getting, just so they don't think I am being cheap. But then I come to my senses and think, nahh!! leave them 5 bucks and they can go buy their own silver. LOL.

Sincerely, Garoulady

Very nice little silver stash. Wonder what the old lady was thinking? Well, these coins are old, but maybe they are still good. Lol

Should leave the silver with a note =) They may not end up caring and just spend it off and end up back in your boxes mwuuahaha

That was the weird thing. She ONLY paid in old coins. I never saw her with a single bill. She was definitely old enough to have survived the depression. She could barely see to drive her 1980 something silver Buick. Nice as could be, but I don't know how she could see to drive.

I almost wonder if she kept all of her money at home. I know that a lot of people did this after they lost money to banks during the depression.

Anyway, I was 16 at the time. Maybe I should have told her what she was giving away. Not sure what she would have paid with at that point.

Yes, those were the days! I worked in a grocery store in about 1980. Cigs were .50 a pack and every morning this guy would come in to buy 2 packs of Camel straights - with a cc mint silver dollar!

Even though silver wasn't worth squat then, the collector in me would have snatched up those coins, congrats!

I know. I was only 16, but my father taught me well. I brought them home and put them in a jar. They have been in that jar at my parent's house for over 15 years.

I started coin collecting recently with my son, who is struggling with math. The coin collecting has been helping him tremendously with his numbers and I think that coin collecting is also a great hobby too. I doubt that it will ever go out of style.

I'm down home for a funeral this weekend (had to laugh about the other thread where someone was driving home for a funeral as well - CRH along the way) (oh yes, the thought crossed my mind as well). I figured it would be a good time to take a look now that my son is enjoying the hobby.

Thanks for all of the replies!

When I was a kid, an old woman used to pay me with coins for shoveling her walk.. I obviously spent the money on candy, but I always now wonder if she was giving me silver.. Oh well.. too late now..

that's awesome. I delivered pizzas for years about a decade ago, best job I ever had, best times I ever had

My dad used to deliver pizzas in Chicago. It's funny how so many people have a connection with that job.

A friend of mine once told me he had buckets of silver. I asked him where did you ever get all that, collecting? He said no, I used to work at a local amusement park. I would pick out the silver coins from change even though they were not worth much then. I just LIKED silver!!!!!!
