Please excuse my ignorance but, can someone inform me what a "KEY DATE"is or what it means?
Thank you in advance...
Jeff

1877 is the ultimate key date. However, 1872 is a semi-key date as well as other 187@ in the series. 1871, 1872, 73 and so on

That 1872 has a nice patina sealing it ! Make sure you leave it intact when and if you clean it ! I like the teardrop harness mount too ! :icon_thumleft: Mainerelic

Great, great find, congrats!! :icon_thumleft:

So I'm guessing that the "dirt" that is visible did not come off with the toothbrush? It looks rather loose and dry but maybe it is hardened material?

I would think that some hot peroxide and a Q-Tip would loosen up any harder stuff on the coin. Try a test spot to start.

Otherwise I think the coin has easy AU details, very nice patina as well.

HH all!

Re: THOUGHTS ON CLEANING & PRESERVING A KEY DATE INDIAN 1872?

Congrats on a nice IH... I would clean it by just soaking it in olive oil. It takes a little time using this method, but does not
harm the coin in any way and keeps the patina of the coin.

Don't use peroxide unless u want to lose all the green patina. Peroxide will turn your Indian into a very ugly dark coin.
