three digit phone numbers

frankly can't find where 3 digit numbers were used. I see 4 and 5 from the early 1900's.

Here is a link that might help. It says that three digit phone numbers were used proir to 1958 in rural areas.

Just fyi, the darkend part of the pic has the first two initials and the last name of the person which probably helped in dialing.

In the 1940's, the population of my town in Oklahoma was around 18000. Our phone number was 928. The all night coffee shop was 18. I have a 1938 phone book with plenty of 2 didget numbers and some 4 didget. No prefixes.
