Find of the day was the barrel key...
Odd pewter whatsit, first I thought it was a bell, then I thought it was a cup, then I see the top is sealed... What ? :icon_scratch:
Top to a pewter case of some kind adorned with lilies, brass hinge.
I think the bottom is out there, had the signal, but the tide drove me out >:(
4 and 5 inch ships lantern wick holders.
Face powder mirror Compact with 'Immortelle' sash.
'Bola Cola' bottle from NH.
Gunner toy.
Baseball thing. (from trophy?)
Y&T padlock.

Interesting finds yesterday Herbie! :icon_thumright:

That key is unusual, I never seen one like it? :o
You called it a "barrel key" ? How does it work? :icon_scratch:

Hope to get out this morning myself back to the 1880 School site.

Have a nice weekend buddy,
Dave

Congrats on some more Nice saves, :icon_thumright: !

Thanks for the replies!
Dave,
I believe The key would thread into the barrel tap to turn valve and allow access to the 'precious liquids'.
I've found several keys, but only one tap, it was made of lead alloy and squashed flat
Here's a link to my whatsit post with some good tap examples from Kuger.
Best wishes on your Hunt! Herbie.

Herbie, could the pewter cup loooking piece be the foot for a pewter cake plate, compote bowl, or serving tray? Nice saves, Quindy.

Nice haul :icon_thumleft:

Was that a key or a wind key for an item?

Blaze

Good eye Quindy,
looks like a base to me, whatever it supported was iron, the narrow end was encrusted with black oxide and debris.
and the item is definitely weighted.
(with smuggled gold dust I'm sure) :laughing9:
it reminds me of a brass spittoon base I found a while back.
Blaze, I sent ya a pm about the key..
Thanks All & HH ;D

Cool Toy !

Can I assume you are missing one wheel ?

Love to find a cast iron toy of some kind...someday.

Thats how I started out. Pulling bottles and old crusty stuff out of the muck of the bay I grew up on. Love it!

hi Rick,
I'm not even sure if the wheel goes with that one, same vicinity, but this site is a toy haven!
Thanks all! HH

Fantastic salvaging operation there!
I'm thinking that it may have actually been used with the old gas lamps from around the turn of the century.
I'm stressing the word "think"
No coffee.... no think.
Making some now.
Coffee, not thoughts.

I've found a few of these keys, was always told they were barrel tap keys,
Can anyone confirm either way?
HH to you all
