Minelab Explorer XS-2, Garrett Ace 250
Tiger Shark has a Saltwater mode switch on the faceplate so it is not a problem. Both are excellent in fresh or salt. However I would give my vote to the Excal because of better depth, ease of use and iron mask, not just discrimination. Lay a gold ring down and lay a large nail over it. The Tiger will null on the nail and you won't hear the ring. This is the same on all detectors BUT Minelabs. Excals will still sound off on the ring!

You can use any detector you wish to pay for, but time is the only thing you never get back and why waste it swinging a less than perfect detector for the task?

The Tiger only got me 4" depth in the water at Destin. I am now researching the Excal for the beach. The Tiger is incredible in fresh water, but lacking in the salt. The Tiger does have a salt mode that keeps the falsing away, but mine had no depth. HH Joe

I have never used the Tiger, but I love BOTH of my Excal's, (got an Excal for back up for my Excal).

Here is something to consider, if you buy it new, you can get 70-80 % of your money back on resale in 5 years, if you buy it used you can get 80-100% of it back, check Ebay or the "for sale" sections of the detector websites, you will see this is true. Remember that does not include the value of your finds.

I bought both of mine used and I know I could get the full value of what I paid for them if I wanted to sell them on Ebay, they are still working perfectly. ($850 for first, $750 for the one I just got)

Both re good detectors but the Excal is better in many more places. If you need more help with your purchase please call me.
