time to buy sand scoop help please

which do I want

1/2 in holes or 5/8 holes

will be hunting shallow water at the beach. I know I need one of those step/foot models so I can jam it into the wet sand and dig but the holes got me wondering.

I just built my own beach sand scoop from a feed scoop.

After trying many hole sizes I ended up with 1/2" but you can go up to 5/8 and still not lose dimes.

Dimes are .702 and 5/8ths is .625

This of course means you will lose small ear rings but it's not like you can not scan the pile if it's not in the scoop.

I simply didn't have a 5/8 bit so that's why I ended up with 1/2" holes.

The question is, how big are you? I use an aluminum RTG 7" Monster scoop http://www.rtgstore.com/scoops/big7waterbig.jpg I am 72" tall, weigh 230.lbs, and that sucker gets heavy after five-hours in the water and on the wet sand. Think about your physical capabilities as well. I know folks that buy huge scoops, and go home after two-three hours cause they are pooped!

oh yes weight is definitely an issue. I can't lug the heavy stuff around for hours on end that is good to remember, I will check the weights on them before I purchase. good reminder. heck the detector gets heavy also lol

I am thinking 1/2 inch hole since they are smaller it would help on smaller items obviously.

I went onto that site your recommended.

came up with this one. I think it would be a good fit for me.

The scoop is made with 14 gauge 304 non-magnetic stainless steel with either 1/2" or 5/8" holes punched throughout the bucket. The handle is also stainless steel. The scoop bucket is approximately 9" long by 5" in diameter. The round stainless bracket is welded to the bucket and handle for strength and for use as a foot kicker. The 7/8" stainless steel handle is 40” long and has a rubber hand grip for comfort. This scoop is made for shallow water hunting. Overall length of this scoop is about 47" long. This scoop weighs 4-1/2 pounds. (The photo of this scoop shows 1/2" punched holes; the link in the text shows a the 5/8" holes.)

Good luck on your scoop choice....lots of them to choose from.
The 1/2 inch holes seem to be fairly good for keeping smaller targets
in the scoop and sift thru the wet or dry sand pretty well. 4 1/2 pounds
is not too bad for weight....you should be able to dig with that for a while.

I just went all out and purchased an 8 inch monster. Ill let you knw how it works after i get it in the sand a few times.
I was sick of scooping 8-10 times for deeper targets, and i broke 2 of the ones i got from kellyco this year.

wow I have to say that wider scoop situation looks nice. I would see that you could get a better big scoop off that than the more narrow one I am thinking about. And in water it would be important to find that target fast with one giant scoop

Do you just go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a post hole digger handle and bolt it on?

Last year I had a wrist injury and had to switch to a lighter scoop. They manufacture a smaller model of this scoop that turned out to be perfect and is now my main scoop. It has 1/4 in holes, fast draining and very light weight. It is stainless steel and as strong as I have needed. proscoop.html
