I would like to introduce myself first. I am a archaeologist in Tioga County Pa. I have over 50,000 relics from an archaeological dig in Lawrenceville, Pa. There is a webiste, book, and a dvd that was published on my dig, all done by me and the discovery channel. The website is www.thecosmoresite.com On this dig there is hundreds of civil war relics and thousands of Native American artifacts. There is so many civil war relics because the railroad borders the east side of the mound. My mound is 20 miles form Elmira Ny (Civil war prison camp) They stopped here as an encampment. I have a garrett 2500 and travel all over the US treasure hunting for relics and coins. I would like to travel again soon. If There is anyone interested in traveling for a week or so let me know. I also would like to join a metal detecting club somewhere close to me. I teach archaeology and metal detecting to thousands of people monthly. I travel all over the US, to put on shows and tours. If anyone would like to talk, feel free to ask me. This is my first post here. Thank you..... ps........All my artifacts are housed in a state museum ran by me.

Although I Definately can't join you on something like this.

Welome to TreasureNet.

Very Intresting Post

I welcome you to the net because I feel we need all different skills to broaden our knowledge.
I am not a collector, For some reason I cannot keep any thing, as far as I am concerned it belongs to history for all people who are part of it. I never sold anything I found, its not mine. That would be as bad as me selling your car.LOL
I admire what you do, I just wish I was young enough to tag along.
I like prospecting and have broadened into Gems. Any relics or clues I run across
ends up with people like you.
Keep us posted most of us would love to hear your adventures. Gnewt

The most ardent knowledgable CW relic buffs/hunters I've seen, on any web forum, are ...... hands down ..... the relic forum section of Treasure Depot. Be sure to check in there too.

I just wanted to let everyone know I was digging yesterday on my mound, and found a beautiful civil war button. Has the eagle and shield. We also found a 2 bullets.....nice day....

Where the heck did you dig in Lawrenceville? Part of my old stomping grounds. Didn't think there was a square foot left without a house on it.
Musta been in the Arsenal area...did you know they used to test fire their canons, firing them across the river? Canon balls were found on the hillside above 28.

I was born and raised near Tioga, Pa. There are many places to hunt. Been doing it about 40 years, "before and after the metal detector became popular" in this area. Where or what is 28 ? I have never heard of it.
Never will be hunted out in my life.

28 is in lawrenceville the one near Pittsburg. My lawreneville is on the NY/Pa border.

Thanks for letting me know.
I do have to get time to stop in at the museum.
i go by there almost every day.
I live only a few miles away.
I find your work very interesting.
My father pointed out a site to me many years ago where there is a pile of flint, from where the Indians were making arrow heads or "points'. He told me he would take me up there on that mountain and show it to me sometime. He passed away before we could do that. I know what mountain he was talking about, as he pointed to it when we were driving by one day. It is above the Mill Creek bridge on rt.15.
Hope to get time and chat with you some time.
Wish you the best,
Clayton

Interesting post ! I was born and raised in Elmira, I live in Big Flats right now but will be moving back to Elmira as soon as we close on our house. I remember when I was younger, sometime between 6th - 8th grade there was an archaeological dig done not far behind my parents house. For all you civil war buffs out there..... Elmira, NY is well known for it's prison camp durring the civil war. The prisoners were ordered to dig what is now Foster's pond, they used this for drinking, bathing and eventually for dumping garbage and actually used it as there bathroom. Many people started getting sick and dying off. I know that small pox was a major problem at one point amongst other diseases. The prison camp was way over crowded and supplies were scarce. People were starving and also freezing to death durring the winter months. Anyways, my parents own a home on the south side of Winsor Ave, right near Foster's Pond. The location of the the orignal flag pole is across the street and one house over, they have a marker in it's place as they moved down in front of the waterboard with a monument that was built for it. I remember when they did the dig they were on the island between Foster's pond and the Chemung river. They dug towards the West end of the island but claim they never really found much other then what they believed was the remains of an old roof. I have recently purchased a larger sized coil for my detector and decided to go to the island again to try it out. The 1st day I started on the West end without much luck, the next day I went to the East end of the Island. For the 1st time in my life I was happy to see that some woodchucks had been down there digging as well leaving small mounds of dirt off to the side of the holes. There are bout 5-6 holes in one little section, I decided to run my detector over the mounds and got all kinds of mixed signals. I didn't really find anything special with the detector but I noticed while sifting through the mounds that it wasn't only dirt but also ash with many pieces of broken glass, plates and other things like jars in which I could tell were very old. I found a couple of very interesting pieces of the remains of a jar with writing and much to my suprise a date as well. The date of 1862, some type of marmalade container with england printed on it. I did some research on it and found one like it on ebay. I also found some other small fragments of another jar but can't make most of it out. The only part that is legible says....
Creme Violet Sec
A ____ cream
------ --------he skin
there's a little more under this but can't make much of it out.
Considering all the ash I'm assuming this was a garbage and or burning pit of some sort. I also think that the archaelogists picked the wrong side of the island to dig. This seems like a great spot for a dig to me. I can post pics of the area and the things I've found if anyone is interested.

Hey, just wanted to say Welcome to T-Net!!
It's great to finally see an archaeologist with their head on straight!
Kinda a fresh breath of air after another thread I just visited. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you're able to find a good club and an outlet to speak on both metal detecting as well as archaeology. :) Sure sounds like it would be an interesting bunch of lectures, all of which I wish I were able to be there for.
Best of luck to ya!

I just moved to tigoa and could help out it's been awhile since I've done any hunting but I would like to get back into it and learn a little more about my new area
