Tnetter Mangum and I set off early on Thursday morning for the 5+ hour drive to the Shenandoah Valley. We were headed to visit Relic Nut and Damnails. These guys are great, I really appreciate their hospitality. I can’t say enough, Thanks gents.

We stayed at RN’s hunting camp. It’s a little house deep in the National Forest. It’s a great place! You have to drive through a giant river to get there.

We got to hunt some beautiful places, the scenery was impressive.

It was a big mountainous open place. I walked a lot of miles.

Our hosts had spots all lined up for us, all we had to do was find the stuff. I am coin guy, but didn’t get the coins, shout out to Mangum and Damnails for Spanish and seated respectively.

At one of the places we hunted, Mangum stumbled upon a little colonial patch, and the three of us bee lined to it, classic bottom feeding!

I found some flat botton, three are tombac.

I managed to find some shoe buckle frame fragments too. Also got a cuff link and a wedding ring, they were a few hundred yards away near an later 1800s foundation.

An old house coughed this up. It took us a while to figure this one out. They laughed at me and said it was a finial. I knew it wasn’t a finial. Turns out to be an 1880s pencil sharpener! It even has “Chinese writing” on it.

I got this buckle. Mangum thinks it’s old, I’m not convicted, even though he is always right. Any input is most appreciated.

We got to hunt the area where the enemy camped during the Civil War. I was able to find some Minie balls, and a lone round ball. Most of them are the .69 caliber ones, big hunks of lead! It was really humbling to be in exactly the same place those soldiers were.

The last hour of the last day, at a place I had to beg them to stop at, I managed to find an eagle I coat button. It’s fragile, but intact. I’ve only found a few CW buttons, so I was thrilled to see it.

trip and finds!

Sounds like an amazing trip. Great finds.

Way to go Tom! Sounds like you had a rad trip with some good fellas. Great buckles and buttons, and that one with the offset bar is a mid 19th century horse tack buckle. Lastly, great infantry eagle button. I have found a handful of CW eagle buttons but I’m still looking for the I.

Cheers
