Tnetter Mangum and I set off early on Thursday morning for the 5+ hour drive to the Shenandoah Valley. We were headed to visit Relic Nut and Damnails. These guys are great, I really appreciate their hospitality. I can’t say enough, Thanks gents.

We stayed at RN’s hunting camp. It’s a little house deep in the National Forest. It’s a great place! You have to drive through a giant river to get there.

We got to hunt some beautiful places, the scenery was impressive.

It was a big mountainous open place. I walked a lot of miles.

Our hosts had spots all lined up for us, all we had to do was find the stuff. I am coin guy, but didn’t get the coins, shout out to Mangum and Damnails for Spanish and seated respectively.

At one of the places we hunted, Mangum stumbled upon a little colonial patch, and the three of us bee lined to it, classic bottom feeding!

I found some flat botton, three are tombac.

I managed to find some shoe buckle frame fragments too. Also got a cuff link and a wedding ring, they were a few hundred yards away near an later 1800s foundation.

An old house coughed this up. It took us a while to figure this one out. They laughed at me and said it was a finial. I knew it wasn’t a finial. Turns out to be an 1880s pencil sharpener! It even has “Chinese writing” on it.

I got this buckle. Mangum thinks it’s old, I’m not convicted, even though he is always right. Any input is most appreciated.

We got to hunt the area where the enemy camped during the Civil War. I was able to find some Minie balls, and a lone round ball. Most of them are the .69 caliber ones, big hunks of lead! It was really humbling to be in exactly the same place those soldiers were.

The last hour of the last day, at a place I had to beg them to stop at, I managed to find an eagle I coat button. It’s fragile, but intact. I’ve only found a few CW buttons, so I was thrilled to see it.

The real treasure is spending time with like minded gentlemen. Thanks fellas.

Thanks for looking and good luck on your hunts.

Its an 19th C buckle for horse tack in an older style. (you were right)

Hey Bud, thanks for the kind words. That pencil sharpener is way cool in my book. You did very well this trip even if you and I didn't get the coins. I am glad we stopped so you could get that sweet Eagle I. I was getting tired of that little man setting on your lip [emoji13]!
All jokes aside, you and Mangum are great hunting Buddy's and all around good guys I'm glad to get to hunt with you. See you soon!!

I thought the same thing initially but then took a closer look. The site this came off of is strictly late 18th century & it is white metal, not brass. Quite a few of the shoe buckles found were made out of the same material

Had a blast buddy! I’m rejuvenated! I haven’t had that much fun in a long time & ready to do it again!

Great post, and what a great time y'all had. The finds are all secondary.

It's always good when you can meet up with and hunt alongside some good people. Sounds like you guys had a blast, Tom I gotta say that's a hell of a haul of buttons but I'd kill to get a 3 ringer and you knocked it out of the park! Congrats buddy, well deserved and kuddos to your hosts. I think this post is worthy of a:

Go sit in the truck!:laughing9:

Nice variety and great saves!

Thanks for taking us along, Tom, and grats on the goodies.

I think Magnum is right about that buckle. Looks like a spectacle style buckle. Great finds! Your old silvers will come.

I told you it would be a grand adventure. Except for the wet shoes, it worked out very well. I don’t know why people don’t want to travel long distances with me to off grid locations to meet guys from the internet. Go figure.

We’ll go again soon. Thanks man.

It's not a typical spectacle buckle shape & the biggest clue is the off-set bar that didn't occur in the 18th C. (however, believe what you will & all will become true:thumbsup:)

I disagree on the offset bar. This is an example of a buckle we find in the South often & I have found them at strictly late 18th century sites. These are brass but you get what I'm saying51140323_10157051834349375_124628255733972992_o.webp

By the sounds of your post Tom, it reads like ya'll had a great time with plenty of finds. It also looks like the weather was better than forecasted. I sure wish I could have made it this year, but maybe we can do something over Memorial day weekend. Current plans with the boss (wife) have us in Galax VA at that time.

I'm loving that pencil sharpener, but was hoping you'd pull a breast plate or nice CW buckle.

Your friend
