To NYC beach hunters

Just incase you look at these fourms. Please for the love of god use a pouch and put the trash you dig out of the sand into it. Its sad when i have to pick up your trash you leave on the ground after the morning crew go's down the beach cleaning it. Whats even worse is putting the target you dug back into the hole and covering it. You spent the time digging it, is it that hard to put the cap/tab into a pouch untill you get close to a trash can? I have pictures of the trash and the people that are doing it. I dont want to take it to that level but i dont want to lose the beaches i hunt.

Ez, I wouldn't call that a rant.................

What is stupid is when they leave the trash on the ground or in the hole they are just going to end up detecting it again next time they hit the beach.

I would not hesitate to walk up to them and politely remind them your not suppose to leave your trash, that it gives all detector hunters a bad name. If that don't work then given half a chance I would deposit it in or on their car.........................

Thanks for posting this subject. The vast majority of us that do cleanup as we detect need to get these other people on board or we all lose. What are they thinking? Has anyone got any ideas how to correct this problem? Joe

A 2 X 4 to the back of the head would do wonders, but some will probably think that is too harsh.

Be nice if the police would slap them with a littering fine of $100..................

I wish they would outlaw all metal cans and glass bottles on the beach period, no exceptions. $100 fine Sure would help with the poptops, bottle caps and can slaw after about 6 months.....

If I didn't put it there why am I obligated to take it home with me. Maybe that is a bad attitude and believe me I have removed tons of trash from the beach, but some of the beaches I go to (never NY), it is impossible to fit all the trash you discover in a pouch. Maybe a wheelbarrow, not a pouch. I see nothing wrong with covering it back up. That is better than bringing it to the surface. Also if I am working a beach and realize I am the only one removing any trash, I stop for the simple reason, Why should I be trash boy when everybody else is just gonna come in my wake and only have the good stuff to find. If everbody is a pig, why should I be any different.
Also if it is a beach with a rake, if it is left on the surface the rake will get it, although I never do that.

Still with the bad attitude I have developed I always have plenty of trash to show anybody that thinks I don't take trash away.

I have about 15 lbs of all different sized batteries from the only "neighborhood Beach" i could imagine you going to in the BX, plus a bucket full of pulltabs. most of us try our best. I try to take anything under soda can size. unless i am close by a trash bin i usually toss the torn up cans near a section marker pole so no barefotters cut themselves. The lead and the batteries are toxic to the beach environment so i feel are more important than a chunk of aluminum that might cut a foot or aggravate a detectorist.

i plan on putting the weight of the toxic metals removed on the back of the NYC permit app renewal where it asks to list notable finds.

The plastic shopping bags from wal-mart stuffed into my trash bag helps with the larger trash that I find. When full, I dump it into the trash containers on the beach. Annoying, I know, but four years in the Army has made it an unconscious act.

Remember guys and gals, its a hobby, and most of us consider removing trash as an integral part of that hobby. There is nothing wrong with being an ambassador.

I am all for the 2 X 4 or a 9 mm. to the forehead. But posting them pictures here may help. Maybe someone here will know them and clue them in.

Course maybe these people are just newbies and don't know any better. That is excusable and they can be corrected. If they are just lazy or think it's someones elses problem, the 9 mm. will work fine.

I take about 75% of my trash with me. the things i dont put in my bag after awhile are sinkers. when my bag starts to get heavey i throw them deep into the ocean . When i am in the water i take all trash especilly sharp items .I don't put everything in my pouch i am not the maid of lazy lowlifes that litter our planet. i do my share which is alot more than the idiots who visit the beach and leave everything they brought for someone else to clean up. One thing i will stop in my tracks and throw away is broken glass. I am out to have a good time not clean the beach so they could mess it up tommorrow. What you should do is take pictures of the slobs that leave it there in the first place. Not the guy who works all week and decides to enjoy himself with his hobby.

I have to agree with Maui Mike, and others. If i dig it, it goes with me.
Do i feel like i am someone else`s trash man, NO, I am enjoying my profession AND providing a service to the beaches i hunt.
Each sharp item i remove is perhaps one less child that could have stepped on it, each piece of trash is one less that polutes or makes our beaches look like crap.

I cannot help what other people do, but i can sure make sure of what I do.

One of my perposials to any state park that is controlled by the park superintendent to gain permission to hunt, is the fact i will remove all trash i see or dig and return to him/her with such as proof.

We are not only enjoying or hobby/profession but we are providing a neccessory service as removing any dangerious materials from the beaches we hunt.

The next time you witness someone doing that, go up to them and enlighten them on our code of ethics, perhaps they are new and know no better. If they get nasty or rude, fine find a lifeguard or police and direct there attention towards the prick.
