I was hunting a Turn of the Century Sawmill site last Saturday with some local clubs in my area.
My second hole of the day around an old oak tree at the long forgotten Sawmill Site turned up a small tiny round item that was so crusted with Cement like dirt it was indescernable,
The item after much soaking and little toothbrush work turned out to be an 1853 3 cent Silver Coin.
Makes one wonder how an 1853 coin ends up in a 1903 Sawmill site. Since it has a hole maybe it was a momento of sorts, worn as a charm or necklace. Or Maybe there was something there before the sawmill. I have dug other coins with holes in them but never knew exactually why.
Below are pictures of coin as found and after cleaning, this is a very rare coin to find in Texas.
My only 3 center and oldest coin to date. It's smaller and thinner than a half dime.
Cropped picture of coin as dug
After some cleaning
Total decent finds
