Back to the permission we've decided to call the Field of Buckles. As of today, we've been to the property 6 times and as of today, we've pulled 10 buckles of various size. Just me detecting today. My wife went with but chose to read while I detected. Found some more interesting items.

Of course, three more buckles. Thinking this filed must have been used for horses and other livestock.

I figure this iron ring could have also been live stock related.

I found one of these before at another site. I think someone said it was half of a bull nose ring?

A lock keyhole cover from a W W & Co. iron pad lock. William Wilcox Manufacturing Company made locks with this logo from 1875-1910.

This item is the second I've found on this site. I'm not sure what is. While cleaning out the inside, I found charcoal packed toward the closed end under the dirt. Cane tip? Buggy brake would be larger, I think?

Ok, I will tell you all what I thought when I found this one. Cut coin? I'm sure I'm wrong, It's very small.

I know I'm grasping at straws here. According to my silver test kit green is .500 silver. This is a test from the small wedge I thought was maybe a cut coin. The test looks green to me, although light green.

Thoughts? Do I have a tiny piece of silver? My silver test to date have all been red or dark red.

Nice finds. Not sure how spread out your buckles are, but if fairly close you’re ons stable/barn. Found one or two sites like that…..lots of buckles.

I think (hope) you’re right. Looks like a cut coin to me. Try a bit of baking soda, wet, and gently rub. You’ll see if silver or not.

Nice finds. Congrats! I’m no expert but if u see a copy, Lon Keim’s book on General Service accoutrements has some miscellaneous buckles pictured that might help ID your buckles.

cut copper
I would like to believe it's a cut copper.
Looking at the size it would be a possible Farthing even.

The grassy area we're working now might be an acre and a half to 2 acres. The buckles have come from mostly a 50 x 25 foot area or so. I think only 1 or 2 buckles were found outside this spot. A lot of iron in the same area too. I'm going to start digging the iron next trip out.

I tried the baking soda, a bit of silver came out, but not much. It's a cleaner now and I think it looks like there are higher points like some design was once there. Maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see?
