Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds { UPDATED (CLEANED) PICS }

Got out to a lot today where a house was removed & a parking lot is being extended, started off detecting not finding too much, except for the old key & shield nickel. I went to dig another signal & dug into a pocket of glass right at the alley & it ended up being a small privy with several bottles, which unfortunately, most of which are very common slicks, with a few common embossed ones mixed in. It was about 3 feet to the bottom, mostly common finds, but still fun to dig, because i dont get to dig too many privies around my area ;D The best bottle would have to be the Carthage, Mo. pharmacy :headbang: After I dug the privy i went across the street where a different house had been removed & found the missouri state seal button, railroad tag, silver quarter, etc. :hello:
Thanks for looking, Chris

Fantastic bottles and finds there. :icon_thumleft: Job well done.
Is that a Victorian era brooch? :icon_scratch:

Re: Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds

Is there a good tutorial on "privy digging"? I've got two located on family ground that I'm just aching to tear into - but wise enough not to, until I know what I'm doing!

Thanks and Keep Diggin'!

Re: Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds

Love that Missouri Button! Looks like its Indian Wars or Civil War..., if you clean it up alittle more I could tell you for sure! CONGRATS! as those buttons are HARD to come by :hello2: :wink: :wink:

Re: Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds

That is a nice Missouri General Service Button. Tice MO200A1.

"A Missouri coat of arms has 12 stars above the eagle, 22mm"
Should say "SCOVILL MF'G CO./WATERBURY" on the back, inside of two rings of dots.

Great finds.

Re: Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds

MM, yes it does appear to be at least part of a victorian brooch :laughing7: Indiana, there is a digger named digger odell that has written a book on how to dig privies, which is pretty informative, you should be able to look him up online. I will try to clean the button & post pics asap, also, yes the backmark is SCOVILL MF'G CO. WATERBURY :thumbsup: Thanks to EVERYONE for the replies :hello:

Re: Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds

Nice Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway tag, if I'm correct. Could be a good one, think you ought to do some more research on it.

You've got some really interesting finds there tokens70! :notworthy:
Love the baggage tag and the bottles. This is by far my
favourite piece though :o Looks to date from 1890 - 1910.
Love to see what it looks like when cleaned up.

Re: Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds { UPDATED (CLEANED) PICS }

Ok, here they are, not too impressive i know :laughing7: The victorian piece will not clean up much better than it was :icon_scratch: it has a weird slick black finish on it :icon_scratch: Unfortunately the button looks to be post war, which is still a good find but it looks to match this backmark in Mcguinn & Bazelon's book.
Thanks Again, Chris

Re: Todays Hunt - ca. 1900 Privy & Detecting Finds { UPDATED (CLEANED) PICS }

cool finds.

I believe the brown circular object is an old door knob. I found a few of those in the past.

Keep the finds and the pictures coming.
