I found this years ago at a homesite that I stumbled across in a field. Related coins from there were largies, flying eagles, 2 centers, shield nickels with the newest coin being 1877 seated dime. Can't get a lot of details off it besides the RAISED crossmarks. So I'm fairly certain that those weren't done post mint. Hopefully you can see that the cross cuts would've cut it into 8 pieces. Fingers crossed 🤞

I'll see what I can come up with but she's a tricky one. Thx for looking

It's copper Don and the same size as a large cent. I'm gonna try some different lighting to see if it helps.

Looks like it has 8 evenly spaced segments on it. For cuts?

Yeah pepperj: that's about the only thing that can be seen but them being raised and not scored I wouldn't think they would be for cuts.

If it's a slick-Rick and no way to clean it without damage (so of no value anyway) you can always use a bit of acid that eats the type of material. For a silver coin for instance, I'd use a bit of silver acid on the face briefly, then rinse it. Keep doing that for longer cycles until you can see some sort of derail. When a coin is stamped, the high spots in the die compress the material more than the low spots in the die. That creates different hardnesses throughout the coin. The acid will eat those at different rates often revealing detail.

Might have to give that a shot. Yeah there's no value besides the history part for me. Thx for the info.

Pretty sure it is a button. Since it isn’t very valuable you might soak it in vinegar and bring out more details

Def not a button. That might look like a shank but it's not. I'm gonna try a few more cleaning techs.

Looks like a maltese cross, is it a maltese 10 grani?
Just looked those up and no not it but good guess. Not a cross, raised cross sections. Thx for looking into it tho, never a bad thgt

What's the thgts on being such a long age find, would it be worth trying to clean it still?
