TOO COLD

Its never too cold, unless you are an elder or have health concerns...I was on the beach today with a stiff easterly wind at 15 mph, ambient temps around 19 degrees, wind chill -4, standing in the water no less digging in the muck. You have to compartmentalize things...

Even when wet, wool will keep you warm...Cotton Kills!

well I am both older and have several health issues, this means when I do get chilled, it takes a while to warm back up. Clint Eastwood once said in a movie something about a man having to know his limitations, I have found that they tend to change somewhat as you get older. but having said that, i am envious of those who can get out there and do anything in this weather. okay, maybe a lot.

Nope. Just a furnace that does not have the output it needs. It can handle the teen temps just fine but when it hits the single digits it struggles. Good thing we don't get these temps but maybe a few times a year.

Bake stuff. And turn on everything else you have - unless you are not into paying the electric increase. Electric stuff throws heat. Lots of it. At least use the lights, all that energy is lost as heat and you don't get SAD. :D

The jet stream has elongated, and therefore slowed. Climatologists think this is due to the human-caused melting on Arctic ice. At the moment the jet stream is sending Arctic wind southward, and the "loop" is cutting across the eastern USA. In most of the northern hemisphere the winter has been anomalously warm---- the USA just happens to be "lucky" with another Arctic jet stream incursion stretching southward.

Funny, now they've even figured out how to blame the freezing cold winters on global warming. They sure are an imaginative bunch.

North America has not had an extremely cold winter in over 60 years. Only old people remember how cold the USA, for example, used to get. The new normal is warmer than the norm decades ago: most people living now have no memory of what the previous normal cold was, since they never experienced it.

I believe that, but I'll take it to the next step for you. We as humans look at timeframes that are based strictly on our lifespans. We will typically think that 60 or 80 years is a long time...............the earth doesn't think so.............and when the Earth is fed up with what we are doing to it, it will decrease our population to a level that is more to its liking. I say this figuratively, but it is how nature works and how the Earth has been taking care of itself for millions of years.

We are but a tick, on the butt of the Earth.

it amazes me how quickly we forget the past in so many ways, even down here in Arkansas, people have forgotten that the Arkansas river has frozen over years ago. the terrible bitter winters were extremely hard times and it all seems to go in cycles with various natural occurrences (such as volcanic eruptions) altering the weather for even a few years or so.

I don't buy the "Global Warming "..garbage. .George Carlin had an interesting quote on it..

To me it's not a matter of buying it or not. If we have managed to screw the environment up that bad in the just the last 200 years, well you just better hang on buddy, because there is no way we are going to turn it around and make things better in our lifetime. We are just too dysfunctional as a species. A few thousand people buying hybrid vehicles isn't going to turn it around if it is true.

Mother Earth will take care of herself, and if we are destined to be part of her future, well that's up to her.

What are they going to do hold us all hostage with bad weather unless we pay them?

That's patent BS, it's not science, it's politics, and shouldn't be in this thread, try putting that crap in the political thread.

I suppose perspective matters. If in the polar vortex's of last winter you might recall it differently: http://www.weather.com/news/news/winter-ncdc-state-climate-report-2013-2014-20140313

Right here, it was practically the coldest and snowiest winter ever (recorded history). Records fell in almost every specific location in several categorizes. Frost depth was a huge problem.

Other places, not so much. Difference accounted for by weather, not climate.

Not sure I understand that post. What Desertphile said and was quoted seems to be making a science based point, if some one wants to challenge it why not do so based in science, rather than a fallacious approach like attempting to discredit by claiming it is political? Perhaps some find climate a matter of politics rather than science, but that does not make it so.

What am I missing here?

We’re so self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. I’m tired of this ****. I’m tired of f-ing Earth Day. I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is that there aren’t enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don’t give a **** about the planet. Not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They’re worried that some day in the future they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me.

The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles … hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worldwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages … And we think some plastic bags and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet isn’t going anywhere. WE are!

We’re going away. Pack your ****, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Maybe a little Styrofoam … The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet’ll shake us off like a bad case of fleas.

The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed. And if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice toward plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?”

That sums it up perfectly ..
