As I sit here this evening trying to compose something intelligent, perhaps witty, but must importantly something entertaining, it's raining outside and the thunder is rolling in the distance. I had hoped to get out and detect a little today, but mother nature was not cooperating, unlike yesterday. Yesterday was Oh So Nice! It was a Sunday, the weather was gorgeous, my wife was out of town on a business trip and I had nothing else to do. So what do think I did? I WENT DETECTING!
Now, since it WAS a Sunday, and it WAS beautiful outside, I knew that the parks would be a riot with folks out enjoying the weather. However, because it was a Sunday, the schools are closed so the playgrounds would be vacant. So a-hunting I went to the elementary school playgrounds or at least two schools I'd earmarked for a future hunt, in a nearby town. One school was a bust though, the school yard was all locked up. Now public school or not, I don't think it's a good idea to be climbing fences or entering an otherwised locked up space by any means. Strike one.. on the the second school yard. Arriving at the second school I found that not only was the playground wide open and accessable I had it all to myself. COOL!
After parking my car.. uh.. er.. my wife's car that is, the one with the "CAUTION BLONDE THINKING" novelty plate on the front bumper. Hey...! The plate was HER idea! <grin> Anyway, after parking the car, I geared up. On went the utility belt with my finds bag, my lesche digger, my probe and my pinpointer.. along with a towel. On went my knee pads, and my gloves, then I closed the trunk. I had to reopen the trunk to get my detector out before I could start hunting though. <rolling eyes> But then the fun began.
Of course I found the usual pencil heads and pull tabs. I've often wondered why I find so many pull tabs in schoolyard playgrounds, just one of those little mysteries I guess. I found coin too. A pretty good handfull of coin to be sure, mostly pennies and dimes though, with the occasional quarter mixed in. I found some odd things too. Well, maybe not "odd" but certainly unexpected. A laser pointer is not the everyday kind of find now is it. I found the usual mixed assortment of snaps and buttons that kids seem to lose so many of on the playground. Another unusual find was this bit of electronic thingamajig. A diode or something? the metal stem is actually taped on rather than part of the diode. Some bit of science fair project or something more nefarious perhaps? Hmmmmm.

More coins, more trash, then this bit of mechanical puzzlement. I'm thinking it's some sort of window crank or something like that. It still turns. I don't know, maybe someone else out there can identify it for me.<shrug>

And then there was this BIG OLD .. that was "Big Old" not gold, watch.. even if it looked like gold. Yeah, buried beneath the woodchips was this Walmart Special, the wrist band is toast, but the bezel is intact, and the time and date were actually correct. Hmm.. nothing special, but a neat find all the same.

I found some schoolyard bling too. A little heart pendant.. not silver unfortunately. I found a couple of little charms from some bracelet or necklace perhaps. And there was this ugly little ring. At first I thought it was the "ring" or barrel off of some oversized ink pen but no, it's actually a ring. The only marking on the ring was a " 6 " or is it a " 9 " on the inside of the ring.
:
I found this hot little pickup truck in one corner of a bed of woodchips, near the swings. It looks as if some kid decided to add to the paint job to "customize" its look perhaps.
More coins, and trash, and then I got locked up. Yeah.. a lock. It's tiny to be sure, but substantial. Too bad I didn't find the key too. Looks like somebody's diary lock or something.

With the playground scoured and the morning still new, I noticed that this particular elementary school backed up to a highschool. A highschool with a nice collection of sporting fields backing right up to the elementary school. A baseball field, next to the track & field ..uh.. field. And the Soccer pitch next to the tennis courts and the football field (yes with bleachers!) Now, seeing the baseball diamond with bleachers and a gravel parking lot and a concession stand building, I HAD to start there.
I don't know what it is about gravel but dimes just seem to flock to the rocks! Hey, that rhymes! Yeah dimes a plenty, and some pennies, and a few quarters. Lots more pull tabs and more plastic bottlecaps than I could count. I only kept the Coke Rewards caps though, a treasure for my wife, she collects the points.
There was one little silver earring, at least I think it's silver, there's no marking on it to confirm that though. There was found one working ink pen, sans cap, but I kept it anyway. I didn't find much around the football field and to be honest I didn't even try around the track or the tennis courts. I was starting to get hungry and I knew my wife would be getting home around noon anyway, so I headed towards home. Another very good hunt under my belt and a story in the making.
So as the rain falls outside, now, I come to the end of this little narrative about my adventures in tot lot metal detecting yesterday. Well, tot lot and sports fields I guess. Either way, I had fun and I hope the rest of you get out and get a chance to enjoy yourselves as well.
Here's everything I found yesterday (and kept) a whopping $6.79 in clad, a working watch, missing it's wristband, a lock, some bling, a new truck.. I think I did ok.
Happy Hunting Everyone !
