I have the Proton 3. Had it for 20 years. It's a great tool for finding shipwrecks. The Proton 4 is even easier to use. I can be down there next week to do a mag survey if you need one.

also, I know they detect cannon etc but would it detects small items such as ships spikes and the like?

Ha, ha, you nailed it........yip, that's the one. Maybe when you learn how to use your new one you can teach him!! Some folks have all the "kit" and not a whole lot of "clue"...

A Fisher unit is OK but not great , I have a 8x and that can't compare with my Aqua Scan. If you are looking for the best it's a Geometrics 882 like night and day from the fisher.
