Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

We are predicted to get some 20 to 35 MPH winds this weekend out of the NW. Expected to blow down along with the cold front. Is anyone expecting these NW winds to move much sand from the areas just north and just south of the Sebastian Inlet? Just wondering....well...actually hopeful!

FYI-the beach at Bonsteel/Chucks seems to be a bit lower last week than in? previous weeks. Anyone else notice this, or is my mind playing tricks on me? Wishful thinking perhaps!

If there is no good sand movement I'm going back to Squid Lips(on the river in Sebastian) for more shirmp and beer!
Maybe that blond waitress with the blue eyes will be working. (more wishful thinking!)

Cheers,

As I understand it, wind from the east will move more sand than wind from the west and a wind from the NE would move the most. The general sand movement on the east coast of Florida is from north to south. NE winds promote that movement.

I will be at New Smyrna Beach this weekend regardless.

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

I went beaching todak on a freshwater beach. We had 50 mph and guksting winds one daylast week. A lot of the snd was blown off and some hard pan was showing. I found several pennies on top of the ground. The other coins were just barely covered. Monty

Strand Filter is right on the money with his info!

I haven't bothered to head down to Sebastian since they repaired the Beach's this past year. Christ! They put a 100,000 football field's worth of sand on there!

I live right across the river from the inlet, well a little north but not much! West Melbourne.

Let me know what you find out on the erosion stuff. I may make a trip down there if things have eroded enough.

Oh, don't know if you have tried this but, I usually take a hammer and a nail with me. I find the boardwalk that sticks out the furthest and drive the nail into the farthest EAST post. I put that nail right at the sand line. You can come back and see if the nail is rising any time you like ;) OR a nice cut in the wood would work just as well.

Good luck and let me know how it's going down there.

Speaking of the INDIAN RIVER in INDIAN RIVER COUNTY ;

in 1907 (DRY SEASON) a Treasure Chest was Supposedly Spotted in a Swampy area
Surrounded by Quicksand, Between the Atlantic Ocean & The Indian River.

Supposedly everyone who has tried to Retrieve it have been unsuccessful

it might have been put there by survivors of one of the many Sunken Ships off shore.

TRY the OUTER BANKS close to A1A,
8 Mile South of Vero Beach.
Between the Indian & the Atlantic.

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

Well Guys, I live in Titusville and travel down A1A to Sebastian several times a week. Rod is right, and we've all seen the
sand that was trucked in and dumped on the beaches. I was hopeing that the predicted winds might erode some of the sand but the winds never came it seems. And so there is still way to much sand on the beaches.

Capt, the mound you speak of was ID'ed by Charles Higgs back in the forties. It is notated on some of his work drawings of his excavation of the south end of the survivors camp. Perhaps the map you are looking at his what he drew.
Most of the mounds were used for roadbed material for roads and the FEC railroad. Some survived, most did not.
In the 1920's, 30's, and 40's the midden mounds were viewed as free fill. There is no doubt that there are some coins below A1A and on the west side of the hiway(A1A). The mound you speak of would be on State property and even if it is still there one could not excavate it.
I'm going to keep my eye on some of the land clearing work going on A1A ?near Jungle Trail. Perhaps one could get approval to detect before building starts if it is privately owned, and I think it is. Thats the way Douglas Armstrong researched the Winter Beach campsite(the southern survivors camp) before it was built upon.

I live in Ft. Laud. It is cold but no wind. We need a big Northeaster. There will be more hurricanes this Summer. Get ready.
They are going to dredge the entire St. Sebastian River for the first time in history. I posted earlier where they will dump it. Someone will find some nice artifacts...Spanish treasure as well. Homer Cato discovered ancient Indian villages on these river banks.

Your link to the location or dumping ground required a password I think...? could you try reposting it with a back door way in?? ?Or list where you can get this info.? I would be interested in taking a drive to the "other side" for this event.? My brother in law found a ton of artifacts when they dreged the river in Edisto, SC? ?;D

Football fields of sand! I finally had time to get to the beach and I made a point to drive south to this other beach I've had my eye on which was badly eroded, since the beach up the block form me were "re-nourished" here just two months ago.... AND DARN IT! I missed out... It is now a HUGE Football field of ugly dark "NEW" sand... >:( I didn't move fast enough I guess.... :'(

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

It was in the newspaper. I found the article online. All you have to do is register and login; just like Treasurenet. It's free. I don't know how to copy and paste. Maybe some other computer savvy member can help.
http://www.tcpalm.com/tcp/local_news/article/0,2545,TCP_16736_4234731,00.html

They have built a containment area with 18 foot high walls for the muck, somewhere west of Fleming Grant Road in southern Brevard County. Probably along the canal. If anyone has anything to add to this, please do.
Dredging will start April 1 in the main branch of the river, west of? the U.S. 1 bridge to a point just west of the Fla. East Coast Railway bridge.?
I hope this helps.

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

Lemme make a few comments about various posts:

a) There was a mound few people knew about in Daytona..On the east side of the river (beach side), about a mile south of the Port orange bridge. Usedta go target shooting there in the '50's.

b) Wave action moves most beach sand..and the waves are usually bigger in the winter (northeasters)..except hurricanes.

c) Flagler has a unique beach system..largely composed of coarse red sand from coquina depoaits near St. Augustine. Beach erosion is normal process, except man has stabilized so many inlets from the Carolinas south, the jetties of which trap sand moving south, that erosion has been accelerated.

d) There is a little known governmental body..FIND..Florida Inland Navigational District.., in Tequesta, that oversees dredging of the Intercoastal waterway. It also owns, or oversees, many of the spoil islands. They establish spoil areas now to dewater spoils, rather than just dumping somewhere.

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

I went to Sebastian yesterday(sat). At Chucks steak house from Bonsteel entrance north was Very eroded.Along the north side of the enterance was about a 10 foot cliff.I detected there pretty thoroughly with no finds, but there was about 5 others there before me.I also went to the south side of the inlet just north of Mclarty and found nothing there either, but the beach is definatly alot more eaten away then it was a couple weeks ago when I went.I also noticed the clearing they're doing on the south side of Jungletrail.I almost stopped there on my way back, but kept going.I was trying to make 1 more beach before dark.Anyway I had no luck yesterday, but the beaches are definatly coming back.GL!!HH!!NATE

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

OK Lawncare;
I think you're on to something. I also see more eroison near Bonsteel/Chucks. South of the inlet looked the same to me.
(meaning little sand movement). Glad someone else noticed the construction clearing near JT.

Several wise, experienced TH'ers tell me to REALLY WATCH the movement of the sand. I believe in what they say.
I also put stock in billfromstuart. He seems to know his erosion stuff pretty well.

Anyway..as I see it, Bonsteel/Chucks will be a great hunting beach as sand moves off of it. South of the inlet is covered with trash which is pulled out of the inlet with receeding tides. Trash flows out and then down the beach and comes ashore near the museum. Lots of time spend digging. No results. Those beaches were "renourshed" a few years back.

Oh well...Today might be the Day!

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

Where exactly is Chucks Steak House?

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

Chucks has gone to the great steakhouse in the sky...the site is the vacant land just north of Bonsteel.

Cobra: Titusville was an early site for development of the Indian river lagoon..a railroad ran from Lake harney to Sand point, where shallow draft riverboats went south. I see they are building condos on the south side...have you ever detected out there?? The old trailer park (now a park) was probably built with spoil from the boat basin, and that may have been the site of the early activity...dunno.

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

take 1A1 south from Melbourne, check for Bonsteel beach parking lot (a few miles from The
Publix supermarket)...then walk on the beach about 100 feet north...You will be on the beach
where Chuck Stake house used to be...Right now is an empty sand lot with a no tresspassing sign.

I have been there three times but have found nothing...
I have read that people have found silver spanish coins in that beach.

good luck... lou

Re: Treasure Coast beaches and winds this weekend

Hey Cap Z;
Yea...it is a great day. Didn't make it out today, but did go check out Bonsteel/Chucks yesterday. Did not see much change in the sand level. Maybe today it was better, but I suspect not. Spent most of the day doing more research and hopeing for a Nor'eastr soon.
