went to a little park in Branson, MO that had been swept away in a flood last year. The city rebuilt the grounds, but i figured it would be a good spot to hunt since about 2 inches of top ground were now two states downstream - and the ground was soaked all the way down to the bedrock!.

Unfortunatley, me and my crappy coin shooter found six beer cans (about a foot deep), four 1970s pull tabs (I kept them because after 30+ years passing, I consider them to be legitimate artifacts now), and about 5 pieces of late 60's clad: two pennies and three dimes.

So I figure someone got out ahead of me and got all the quarters because Im sure I wasn't missing them. I figure somebody using a detector with stronger filtering decided pennies and dimes weren't worth digging up so they passed on them.

I covered about 3/4ths of the place - even found some old hand made fly fish lures 4 inches in the sandy riverside. They smelled just awful so I didn't keep.

stay with me - here's where it gets really cool (and then turns back into a huge dissapointment):

The park is nestled between two large sized foothills (Ozarkians call 'em mountains hahaha), so I figure enough with frostbite on my knees for more beer cans - Im going up that mountain. I get up there and for about 2 hours, its just me and the sounds of the forest. I climb a bit higher and right in front of me, I see what looks like a huge man-sized NEST. Stacks of fallen trees were wedged between the standing trees in what really did look like a big nest. I get closer, and the ground inside is flat and clear of rocks.

A CAMPSITE.

From the rot of the wood and the layers of moss and leaves on the site, it looked like it hadn't been camped for at least 50 years. I turn discrimination completely off - if someone dropped a sewing pin there, I wanted to find it. I get on my knees and start tossing 4 inches worth of decomposing leaves over my shoulder to get to the ground - and I find a circle of stones in the middle. campfires!! I went over that place five times, six maybe - and not even a single peep. I took a penny from my pocket and shoved it in the soft dirt with my finger. BEE-BEEE yep my detector was working.

but this site was CLEAN. I imagined it must have been a regular stop site for a local boy scout troup once upon a time because I can't imagine anyone else using that spot without dropping so much as a grape ne-hi bottle cap :(

6 hours in the cold and wet - I guess two dimes and 3 pennies wasn't all that bad. But still - what a let down.

What a let down. Maybe your next site will make up for it.
