Nice finds JDug. Haven't a clue on the trigger guard but someone will leave an educated guess and the model, etc.

I am going to guess you found it with all the other civil war relics. Most like likely a 1861 Springfield or a 1853 Enfiled as the where they the most common rifles of the Civil War. There were many other weapons during this time and it could also be off of one of them.

Neither the Springfield rifle nor the Enfield rifle trigger guard had that little curly "tongue" at the end of the finger-loop. I agree with Recondigger, to me it looks like part of a pre-civil-war civilian musket's trigger guard.

That type of brass trigger guard was common on civilian rifles and pistols, being broken like yours makes any further narrowing down of the type virtually impossible.

It looks like a Kentucky Or Pennsylvania muzzle loader , a civilian rifle.
