Tuskegee N&I Institute cuff button

Today I found some camp fire lead, small bullet, a rivot, a small buckle and then this cool cuff button. Says "Tuskegee N&I Institute around the perimeter with a U.S. flag in the middle. Tuskegee Inst. predates C.War but did students fight or is this likely post C.W.? Does anyone know what this thing is in second pic.? Thanks

Tuskegee University didn't exist during the Civil War. Booker T. Washington headed the school when it opened on July 4, 1881. Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute was the University's 4th name from 1891-1937.
