Two BESTS today- 1909 VDB Wheat & 1800's padlock

At lunch I continued my gridding off of the side yard. I had just started detecting and noticed something out the side of my eye. I look over and saw the donkey running around the yard free as a jailbird! :o No one was home, so I threw on my John Wayne hat and headed him off at the pass. O.k., I actually went and opened up the gate so he would go back in the pasture, but he chose to climb through the broken boards of the fence instead. I haven't been that much of a cowboy since my rocking horse days as a kid. :)
Back to detecting, I found some neat stuff by the grapevines towards to back. You two Bob's know where I'm talking about. :)
I had a big signal that continued for about a foot. I knew it was going to be some sort of iron crape'. It turned out to be a red painted heavy piece of thick iron (not rusty) with grooves throughout it. It was old, but I have no clue what it is? I walked it over and chucked it into their junk pile at the edge of the woods, went back to the hole, and swung to see if there was anything else in the hole. Sure enough there was another signal. This time I dug up a nice solid brass 1800's padlock! This is the nicest lock I've EVER dug so far. I got it home and it cleaned up nicely. It has the engraving on the loop portion, but the cool thing is, the front keyhole cover still springs shut like new when you let go of it. I think this lock was save from years of abuse by the metal plate that I pulled off from above it. Now all I need is a key. :'(
I dug a nice suspender clip with a bird on it too in the same area.
I also dug four wheats, and one turned out to be MY BEST WHEAT EVER. A 1909 VDB!!!! I could tell by the green patina that this one was going to be old. :)
Here's my lunch finds today:

*1800's brass padlock - My best one!!!
It has "Eagle Lock Co. Terryville, Ct. U.S.A." on the loop portion.

*A 1909 VDB Wheat!!! - My oldest wheat ever!!!
Is this thing worth anything without the sacred "S" mint?
Other wheats were 1946 , 48, 57.

*A suspender clip with a bird on it.
Any idea of the age?

*"Harriet Hubbard Ayer - Famous Beauty Preparations" beauty product lid. (1800's)
Here's some info on this famous lady:
http://beauty.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.2020site.org/beauty/bio.html

*Silver plated button, silver plated spoon head (my 2nd one like this).

*A fastener of some sorts. Old???

*A rusty iron loop that looks pretty old.
Any idea what this could be? Horse related?

Not a bad lunch at all. ::)
Thanks for looking,
MM

Civil,
Can you believe all I had to do was scrub it a bit with a toothbrush, and wipe it with a bit of olive oil? (The lock that is. :o )
I was amazed at how nice it came out of the ground. It must have led a sheltered life. Most of the locks I dig up are that rusty iron crape'. This was my first nice brass one.

Steve,
Actually, I have a microscope I use for those CSI photos. I shoot a digital picture through the microscope lens once I have it focused in. It works great.

Thanks Wyatt. I really haven't done too much except for the yard so far. Hopefully there's some old coins and CW relics for me out in the woods with the ticks and snakes. :o
