And only one lonely 64 dime.

To top it off the bank I dumped at claimed it was only $496.90.
I had them re run it, then it was $497.50
I had them run it again, $497.40.

Talk about some BS. These were Brinks warped rolls.
The branch manager swears still, even though there is a discrepancy that the machine is fine. Despite 3 different counts on 3 different occasions. Yeah right, So where did 41 to 35 dimes go? and come from, and go again? he still didnt see the problem.

The manager swears up and down that that is all that was in there. and the girl that took the coins was quite the snotty little B*&$% when I asked her to run them to start. not sure what to do on this one. I told the manager as manager it was on him to make sure his bank was accurate and not off. And he swears that "all the other business that use the counting services are accurate and this is the first complaint he has ever ever ever had!"

I told the manager to look at the cent bag and see how many went in there. he has still not gotten back to me.

If it was over $20 difference I could just file papers with the local court and just play the numbers and cost game with them...whats cheaper, Giving me my couple bucks or paying for the legal fees and time for there legal staff. A great threat to pull on people who are being poopy heads about such matters. Spam them with frivolous yet costly and time eating paper work.

But its too little. Just upsetting is all, I feel taken by them, and treated poorly when nothing but courtesy and respectful and niceness on my end...so far...

what do you think, what steps have you taken when this has happened too you?

I am thinking on Tuesday I should go in and demand buy every coin off the bags they have, have them run else where at my regular bank and see what the difference is then.

My dump CU's counter gives me a receipt, which shows exactly what was counted. At times, it shows dimes counted as cents...they credit my account for the difference.

you got a silver dime which is currently worth $3.13. You were shorted $3.10 at most, sometimes you win in this game, sometimes you lose. I got shorted over $200 a while back when my dimes were counted as pennies, got my money back though. Don't take it personal, but don't get so mad over a $3.10 loss. You will more than make up for it in the long run. HH.

Its just the principle of thing that irks me, I mean one or two coins off, sure what ever, but 30 to 35 is a lot to go missing.

I am thinking I should buy a box from them, open it in front of them, and have them run it so there own eyes can lye to them since they are so infallible.

Its just such a time suck.

I see what you mean, good idea. My bank sends out their bags to be counted, and if the bag comes up as an overage, that overage gets sent back to the bank. the tellers know I have knowlege on how much coin I dump every time, if it is off by $1 or $2, no biggie. nothing to lose a dump bank over.

Dave, i'm assuming the machine does not give a receipt?

Clear Brinks wrap coins are the worst for accuracy. Many times they are short. I know an unscrupulous hunter who flexes the plastic to pull the silver out and then reloads them and returns the clear wrapped rolls. If he gets skunked, he pulls a dime from each roll as his "fee" to look through the skunk. The bank never questions the accuracy of the rolls. I keep telling him that it is bad karma and a flat out fraud what he's doing, but he never listens.

I think you are over reacting. I dump 3 to 5 k a week , and as long as its within $20 I just let it go. I figure the silver found and the rejects all even it out. Now if its a large amount , such as the $100 or $860 I got shorted a few weeks ago, I give the bank my name and account number and its found in a week. Its all part of the game, and if you bust there balls to much they will bust them back even more. Good Luck and happy hunting.

I'm with Diver Down and treeslayer. Is it possible your "Brinks warped rolls" were short to begin with? Did you make sure each one had 50 dimes each? I'm not saying coin counters are 100% accurate, but if you raise too much hell over $3 then you will probably be looking for a new dump bank.

I hear you on the principle part. Walmart charged me twice for a tube of hairball cream for my wife's cat. I'm thinking of telling them what happened next time I'm there and seeing if they give me my $3 back. I mean someone would have to have a lot of cats to need two tubes of hairball cream. Hell, I don't even like cats :o

I used to think I was getting "free Pennies" all the time, then I found out that it was counting a few Dimes and Pennies. I have a good rapport with my dump bank though, so if I say "I think it counted X Dimes as Pennies," they'll check the Penny bags and then credit me.

I got shorted a dime the other day I believe from my feeder bank. I had gotten $50 in dimes. Was done searching them so I was making stacks of 10 to make sure I had everything. My cat comes over, thought she ate one. Haven't found any proof that she did. But any roll could be short.

I think I"m going to make it a habit of counting them before I search them. Or maybe count each roll as I go and keep a log on paper.

Not sure what happens with the coins after they go thru the machine? But if it counts them and dumps them back out somewhere else. You should have said whatever came out is mine. let me count it myself and you can watch.

Also this might be a good reason to only dump small amounts at a time if possible. Nobody likes to sit and count tons of coins by hand to make sure they don't get cheated at the bank. When I went the other day I had made up the lost dime and was hoping I'd have $50.10 but nope. This even after another teller spotted a dime on the floor. Girl counting said it wasn't hers, I wonder if it was mine? Don't think the one counting would open the bag before going to the machine though. It could have put me at ease that my cat didn't eat a dime. So either she did or I got shorted by the first bank.

All part of the game. It's still cheaper than paying 8.9% to use a Coinstar-branded machine. I get shorted $0.50-$1.00 regularly for various reasons (pennies in dime rolls, coin counter miscounts, etc), but what I find in silver ALWAYS more than makes up for it. I have also been on the receiving end of coin counter miscounts in my favor (my personal best is $30).

If you cant handle the cost of doing business in this hobby, then there's always knitting. Here is a pic I've posted in the past of dime rolls I got straight from a sealed Brinks box.

You take the good with the bad, but there's no crying in CRHing.

I agree with others, it isn't worth losing a dump bank over. If you are getting clear-wrapped coins, you most likely will be off, they have terrible accuracy, especially with dimes which have both thick and thin coins. Yes, some coin counters do confuse dimes and pennies, but if they do, simply buy some penny bags off of the machine and make some spare cash. But at least on my dump bank, whenever they fill the bag they take it out and I've never seen any dimes in the penny bag and in the few bags I've done of pennies, none have contained any dimes.

Are we complaining about $3 and some change? With what people are making by getting silver for face value, I think having them rerun your coins 3 times is a bit ridiculous. When it is $100 short, then ok. $3 is a small price to pay for this hobby. I can bet they will not be thrilled to see you again, so I am betting having them rerun your coins for $3 just put that dump bank in jeopardy.

I don't understand how they could re-run it. Doesn't it collect into a bag already containing coin?

Anyway, it is just as likely that your rolls were short instead of the searched coins being miscounted by the machine.

It doesn't add up that any dimes were counted as cents. When the machine miscounts as cents, it is usually obvious. In your case, all counts were divisible by 0.10. That wouldn't happen unless exactly 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 dimes were counted as cents. You had one keeper and were dumping $499.90. If 10 dimes counted as cents, your total would've been $499.00. If 20 dimes counted as cents, your total would've been $498.10; for 30 -> $497.20; for 40 -> $496.30; or for 50 -> $495.40. For any other number of dimes counting as cents, you wouldn't have a total ending in '0.' So, that's not it.

When the machine shorts you, the first question should always be "were there any rejects?" 8 out of 10 times for me, a number of coins do not count. They end up giving me a handful of nickels or dimes back along with my cash. Usually 2-3 halves out of $500-$600 don't count. Zn cents do usually all go through though.

I imagine that they at least gave you the greatest of the 3 runs. $497.50 is only $2.40 off of $499.90. That is 24 coins that are in the ether somewhere. Although frustrating, and something to keep an eye on, I personally would just shrug it off.

Machines on both ends (wrapping and counting) can and do mess up. I got shorted $1.50 in halves on a string box. One roll was 3 halves short, luckily Mr. Ben Franklin was in the middle of that roll. It's always a sucky feeling to take a loss. Hopefully you recoup it with an enormous silver score!

I always liked reading your posts years ago, you used to post alot more . I do alot of bags off counters sometimes a penny bag will be loaded with dimes most of the time not. I have found quarters and nickels in penny bags too. I don't know how good the counts are in our bags , I dump alot of coins at once. Wed took back $9500 in dimes,$4500 in halves and $200about in pennies, Idrop them off and pick up the bags later. Take care . Dan
