Cool, not seen that type of commemorative medallion before, seen lots of similar period pieces. It's in great condition!

Copy or not that one is fairly obvious it's a modern fake.

The heads in the boats have torsos on the original, but have no bodies on the copy. Sadly none on your find, either.

Another thing that caught my eye was the fine detail on both sides of the token except the area where the "copy" is. Please understand that I am not accusing you or your friend of anything as the damage could have been done way before it was found.

Glad you came in on this one. Normally they are very obvious to me, but I was on the fence on this one & couldn't decide either way. Other than where probability would lead you.

So I learn from this one, what gave it away? (I have a couple of ideas, but would like to hear yours?)

The OPY is readable right above the wreath below the ship.

Hey,
The brooch is a Victorian Cameo featuring a woman and 2 cherubs. Both women and cherubs were the most popular themes of cameos of that era. Your cameo is nicely carved raised positive relief in what appears to be shell. The brownish color is generally from Helmet shells, and the pinkish color is generally from conch shells.

Nice find :)
