Hit a local elementary school this morning (before the weather got hot). Your basic 1964 vintage with ball fields, and tot lots. Research indicated an old home site on the property (and sure enough, I found some older wheats there). 1936, 1944, 1956. Mostly a lot of iron though...

So I moved to the other side of the ball fields, and found a hot spot. Two large cents within 10 ft of one another... and also a silver dime, an ipod shuffle, and a brass phone bell (not pictured). Both LC's are pretty toasted, but one has a very clear 1845 date... the other is a Draped Bust.

The LC's were maybe 5 inches deep. Found the Ipod shuffle between them (and at the same depth). Funny how things go some times.

Barely scratched the surface. Needless to say, I'll be going back.

Anytime one can find such a large haul as that has had a great day.The last large cent I found was very toasted.Could make out the image only a Matron Head. Super hunt there.

Thanks. I have to say honestly, that every single Large Cent I have ever found, came from some place I didn't expect it.

I find Large Cents at elementary schools and parks... and I find clad at 18th century sites.

Thanks...

Finding two coppers within 10 ft of one another has me dreaming dreams of similar-aged silver.

I've probably carefully hunted only about 5% of this nicely manicured area.

I'm pretty excited.

A better pic of the 1845 Matron LC.

Yeah, it's pretty toasty, but I'm usually thrilled just to get a date off of them...

Congrats on some nice coins. I just found my first LC but it was a Canadian from 1912.

Thanks.

You're in New Hampshire. I'm sure your recent find was the first of many to come.

My oldest post colonial copper was found in a friend's Mom's yard. The house was from the 1940's and you should have seen his jaw drop when I showed him the draped bust LC lol.

Looked at topographic maps of this site all the way back to 1896. No buildings.

But I looked closely at aerial photos from the 50's. There's a faint but unmistakeable road leading to (and through) the area where I found the LC's. And it leads into what is now a small stand of adjacent woods. I think I see a rectangular feature in what is now the woods. Nothing like a cellar hole hunt on a modern schoolyard.

This is gonna be fun.

Any LC is a pleasure to find. I have plenty of draped busts that are a stretch to ID, but they're early and that's what we want.

Gotta love finding large cents at a newer school site. I'd say you found the area where the older home was before the school was built. Probably some more there. Congrats.

Congrats on the silver and LCs. Two LCs would be an epic hunt for me. Good luck finding more!

Went back for about an hour today before the rain came. Some clad, three wheats (a 1910)... and a flat button.

Would have hunted the woods directly adjacent, but they're full of poison ivy.

Will hunt after the season turns.

Awesome research. Sounds like you were "thinking out of the box."
