Dug this today at a site I'll be at for the rest of the winter - posted in today's finds http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,205099.0.html - can sure use some help identifying this. The area where this came from is a known colonial era homestead. Been picking off lots of interesting items there but this one takes the cake. It weighs close to two pounds, six inches in length, two inches wide and a bit over an inch in height. It's "chiseled" away at one end as well (see pics). Definitely not lead, but now I'm not sure about it being iron either. I scrubbed away at this for about fifteen minutes and under the little bit of gunk still attached - this piece is black. I will try and get some better close up shots to show a little more detail.

This was pulled from about 7 inches down. Any help is greatly appreciated...

Foot warmer fire brick, was warmed on top of cookstove, then wrapped in blankets or quilts and put under covers at foot of sleeping area to keep feet warm. My granny used to use bricks on the dairy farm to do the same thing.........NGE

It's a classic for sure - one side says, For "Honest Fishermen" with normal scale and the other side says, For "Dishonest Fisherman" with "illegal" inches (one reg. = two illegal)... ;D

Thanks NGE - were they real brick? This piece is made of metal - my detector was screaming at me when I swung over this... :D

Could be an old iron for ironing clothes.Usually heated on a wood cook stove or in the fireplace.????

DD, Looks to me like a hunk of metal that came off some type of farm implement too. Looks like there might have been a small chunk that broke off at the end. Maybe some type of weight on an old plow or disc harrow.

I agree. Looks like a tooth.

On the end with the "cut" - it almost has a hammered-out look - like it was flared. If this was a tooth, would it have been made of iron? Exactly how would it have been held in place?

I should have said I am guessing. I really dont know much about them but yes they are made of iron and have a chiseled end. They probably attach in different ways. Try cleaning it up for a better look. Something like this maybe but cruder and older?

Found on an old homestead? Reminds me of a wedge. Like the big heavy kind for splitting wood. You know, open a crack in a log or large chunk of firewood, stick the wedge narrow end in, and pound the bejeezus out of it.

Maybe?

Maybe. Here is a wedge found from another site. http://metaldetectingworld.com/photogalary/rev_war_relics/pages/RW63-iron wedge.htm

The only problem is that this piece is not tapered at all. No sharp spots or any other features indicative of a wedge or digger tip, etc.
The one end looks to be roughly CUT. Like it was a piece of stock for something. I'm still leaning towards some use for a blacksmith... :icon_scratch:
