two questions

I'm not much into beach hunting usually. the beach is about a three hour ride down the road and i usually only get down there once or twice a year. this weekend however, they are calling for a nor easter to hit down there on sat and sun. my question is do you guys think this storm will be strong enough to make the trip worthwhile ( I'm in Delaware so we are talking about OC Maryland and Rehobeth beach Delaware). also, when would be the best time to get out on the beach. i was thinking maybe the first low tide during or after the storm. does that logic make sense? sorry for the stupid questions but as i said, I'm not too experienced at the beach. ::)

Most would say during or just after the low tide, but if the storm hits during the high tide, I wanna be there as it recedes. This strips away more sand from the usually normal dry sand and makes the deeper targets easier to get at.

Is it strong enough to be worth while? You never know that really till you hunt the area an see how much sand was removed. You just need to get out an enjoy what time is available to you.

depending on how strong the storm is going to be................sounds like it will form right here by me and move up the coast and gain some strength

ocean city is kinda close, so i would say give it a spin...........certainly has to be better.
if rehobeth is closer for u............drop in there...............i have a feeling u will not be alone which ever location u decide to try...........most everyone is charging their batteries as i type.........i know i am.

thanks guys! i settled on OC maryland. gonna give it a shot on sunday morning. storm oughta hit sat nite, during the high tide, so the timing looks right. dead low is about a quarter to one sun afternoon. hopefully the sand will be leaving the beach instead of coming ashore. i will let you all know how it goes either way.

aahhhh if only i could! have to be back at the loonie bin ( work) on monday. :'(

oh well......... even if the hunting is crummy, at least ill get away from here for a night. thanks for the advice though max!

Another vote for Sandman!

He is right on the money! As the tide is starting to go out, you can be scanning for lines of classification. If you find such a line, you can make out real well.

I have stood there at times, watching as the water is going out, and actually seeing coins being lifted up, and rolling along on its edge, heading out to sea.

A lot will depend on the lay of the beach. During flood tides, the beach can sometimes go through dramatic changes. The wave actions can either pile sand onto the beach, or take sand away. Cuts can develop , running parallel with the beach, or can be perpendicular, creating undulating hills. Check along the bottom of the cuts, and in the low spots between the hills.

It is harder to get a feel for these things unless you spend time on a particular beach, as all beaches have differrent characteristics from one another. If I was going to a new beach after a storm, I would do a zig zag search pattern, working from the top of the beach, toward the water and back. On some beaches, the width of the beach may cause you to do a shorter zig zag search. As you conduct your search, you hopefully will start getting signals. After zig zagging for a while, look back through your pattern, checking where you have dug targets. If you see that your diggings are forming a line, then just turn and follow that line. I have found lots of coins using this search system, and it has been a good return on my time spent at the beach.

well, great finds on the beach were not to be. :'(

the storm really didnt move any sand to speak of in ocean city. im beginning to think i might have to find another beach to hit after these storms. ocean city just doesnt seem to have much erosion after these things. it was a rainy windy mess today, and all i got was a little clad, but it was still better than being indoors........oh well, maybe next time.
