I got out for a 4hr. park hunt in Toronto on Friday and found an interesting Lands and Forests buckle keeper! I’m thinking it dates to the 1930’s, but I’m not sure, as I could find no other examples of it online. I did a 6’ circle grid around the area where I found the buckle keeper, but alas, it wasn’t to be. As you all know from my posts, I’m not a huge fan of detecting inner city parks due to the amount of trash that comes along with them! :tongue3: However, this park is located close to Lake Ontario in an older section of town that saw settlement back in the 1930’s. The area that I was detecting was about 300’ from the main area of the park near a public garden, in fact, I used to play and ride my bike here when I was a kid.

I also found a silver 1964 CDN Quarter a silver Rosie, a ‘33 CDN Penny and a ’53 Wheatie! I’ve found Barbers and Mercs before, but never a Seated or a Rosie. I also found over $7 in pocket change for my efforts! :laughing7:

History - The Department of Lands and Forests, 1920 - 1972 was a department of the Government of Ontario based under the Ministry of Natural Resources. Before 1920, it was known as the Department of Lands, Mines and Forests, 1906 - 1920; The Crown Lands Department, 1827 - 1905 and the Office of the Surveyor General (Upper Canada), 1792 - 1827.

I’m thinking I might head back there again on Monday, just in case the buckle tongue is lurking nearby. :icon_scratch:
Also wanted to let everyone know that I’m having arthroscopic surgery on my left knee on September 3, so I’ll likely not be able to swing a detector again until October.

Thanks for looking,
Dave

I like how there's just enough of the gilt left on it to make it interesting.
Best of luck to you

That's a great looking buckle Dave and with the little bit of silver and an older penny a very productive park hunt. In the big smoke I always figured a keeper every two hours was a pretty good hunt, you did 1/1 ratio so thats great. When you sent those pictures over to me it was a like a fresh breath of air from having my head stuck down around my waste tank.:tongue3: Best of luck on the upcoming surgery hope the down time will be short as the crops will be coming off and the hunting will be on for the fall season.:hello2:

Thanks for your input on the hunt Jim! :occasion14:
You know as well as I do, when detecting parks in Toronto, most of these locals have likely already been hit. All I can do is try and get off the beaten path onto areas that may have been overlooked by others who came before me. This could be because the site was either out of sight or likely looked to be unproductive... I'm hoping this may be one of those sites!

I'll head back on Monday for a couple more hours and look for the missing tongue, who knows, maybe a couple more silvers will pop up. :laughing7:

Hope you have a productive week at your place with the construction work.
Dave

Cool coins & great buckle Dave. I don't coin hunt much but we do find Canadian coins here in Tennessee. WTG, Q.

Got up at 4am thinking about digging, and not in the SH** Tank either. :laughing7: So I'm going off to do a little detecting in the am part of the day then get back to the crappy work that's stinking my life up lately.
Good luck tomorrow on the return hunt for the tongue part of the buckle, looked for an hour for a picture or something on the web but came up empty, wonder what the emblem would look like. Either it would be the Ont. coat of arms, or some scene from the Dept.
The wife used to work for the MNR and has a old contact that might know of the buckle as he's into history and likes to dive for old bottles and relics in the area, so I'll ring him up to pick his brain for some details on the buckle for you buddy.

Fantastic digs!!! I would love to find a buckle like that!

Nice finds! Congrats on the silver and finds!
I wish you luck on the surgery, micro surgery heals a lot faster than reg surgery.
I can get out and around and my finds aren't as good as yours!

Dave,

I really like that buckle--I think it displays very well. Really great find! And of course best wishes on the surgery my friend!! Please drop me a line and let me know that everything went well as I'm quite sure it will!

Big congrats on knocking that Rosie off the list lol! The Seated will be next I'm sure. The buckle is pretty neat, I hope you can find its mate.

Sweet hunt!!

That buckle is cool and silvers always make for a good hunt!!
