Hello tn everyone...I do not know where even to begin... this is going to be long but it is a very nice story and has a lot of meaning so bear with me... I was up at the cabin in northern mn. for about 5 days, my parents bought this property in 1965 from tom white who was jim whites brother...jim white had drowned in big bass lake about 1964 in 12 feet of water in a canoe...they thought he might have had a heart attack. anyway my parents had wanted this property for years and it came up for sale through tom white and we bought it in 1965 and was a very large hunting parcel and still own it today, my father died in 1969 due to an anyourism. there used to be a log cabin next to our new cabin and I never did detect that area before, I just detected using my scuba gear and fisher 1280x detector in the water and some on land as it was just an ok detector on land for logging sites...I bought a new garret ace 250 last6 year and I love it...I was detecting by this very large white pine tree when I came up with some good hits, I pulled 18 or so empty rifle casings in the caliber of 30-30, 30-06,308,western Winchester 25-20, western 250hp., 44 mag, Winchester repeater #12 head stamp. 40-65 wcf wra co. and a few sinkers and a wheat penny....then I decided to move over a bit ( about 40 ft.) when a got a strong signal, I dig about everything when I get the chance if it is not too trashy...this area has a ton of old nails...so I proceeded to dig and went down about 12 inches and came upon a cover so I thought, some more digging and I began to realize this was going to take some time as I was about to un earth a very large tin sign, about 2 hours later I started to see parts of the old log cabin foundation, still digging and not knowing where to put the dirt I had a 6' x 3' hole that now was 18" deep and I was not done yet, finally after a few hours I had the sign uncovered, this sign came in 2 pieces as it was made that way and when I turned the sign over I could not believe my eyes, I just about cried as to unreal more history about this area... the sign read JIM WHITE'S BASS LAKE RESORT...the sign is in very good condition for being there since about 1940's to 1950's I gather. he must of rented out the little cabin that we still own and boats also...it was built in 1921 and he called it a resort...that's what they did in those days.
going to contact jim's daughter to see if she remembers who made the sign or if she knows anything about it...I have to go back in a few weeks to retrieve the rest of the sign...wow, that made my day...now as I was leaving I realize my cell phone was missing..opps, I buried that too...so I use my garret to find that in 11.0" of dirt...the phone is ok, just dirty...I will post some pics of the sign...also there will be a part 2 to this story as I get the rest of the sign....this may not be a banner for you guys but it is for me as for the history I have uncovered. im going to put this in a wood frame and hang it in our new cabin...

thanks,
Gary

That is an awesome piece of history!

That is an awesome recovery!!! Sometimes the best finds aren't the most valuable money-wise but priceless in history! Well done!

That's the kind of detecting stories I like to read thanks for sharing with us.

Wow that sign is neat! I once found a porcelain Cigar sign from early 1900's advertising cigars for 5 cents, sadly it was very toasted.

I'm glad you found it, now get back there and get the rest!

Great historically significant find to site and congrats on the recovery. Welcome back to the sunlight sign. Rest well, your not forgotten Jim.

super cool sign!

Very cool story. .... like in the post above alt of times is not the cash value of a find in a lot of cases but the personal history that it brings to you
Great find and good luck with part 2

Wow, congratulations! Can't wait to see the other part.

That sign is in really great shape for being in the ground that long!
Awesome story! It's the little or odd things in life that make it interesting!

thanks for all your comments everyone... I will get the bottom half o the sign in the coming weeks...also I will show you a pic of the backside...I just have to buy a AT PRO so I can seek out those coins a little better. also it has to be nice to see a visual like a number rather than sound alone...to me a bottle cap sounded like a coin... I also have to return my garret pro pointer...it was fine for one minute and then the next it was screaming at me with no metal at all near by...had to wait a few minutes at then was ok followed by more screaming of alarms...

thanks,
Gary

great story , well told!

Once you get the at pro practice with it if you use iron audio you will be able to tell dif between coins and bottle caps. Those that tell you dif haven't learned the at pro yet or know how to use it properly. Good luck and can't wait to hear part 2.

Great finds! Thanks for sharing...

Great story, I like the sign.

Great sign and story Gary. And I'm glad you admitted the mistake with the phone... now I can. I just didn't want to be the first one to admit this. Mine wasn't near as deep but it was buried.

Fantastic sign, congratulations. You know the folks at the corporate office of Bass Pro would be very interested in your sign. They decorate all of their stores, restaurants, resorts, etc...with artifacts just like that! Happy Hunting, Sub 8-)

Well, if it was about money, few would continue to do this type of work/hobby... Can't believe it came out in such good shape.. And a great story to boot.... Congrats and thanks for sharing.
