Decided it was to hot to dig so I waded the stream that borders b my dig site..I found this in about 2' of water and it's about 14" long..I believe this is an unfinished adze...my pictures are weak but I believe you can see what they were going for...mjm IMG_20180709_073053.jpg

Wow that’s a giant piece whatever it was , Does it not have the correct characteristics for a unfinished gouge ?

This site has yielded so many woodworking tools over the years some full, many damaged and some times just the bit ends...but once they start taking on that shape you had better take notice...mjm

You have definetly found way too many gouge and adze tools then one man deserves. Lol, just showing my jealousy. Maine is the epicenter of that technology, you've found some beauties.

If ya think of it, tell Will I said hi. I know there are reasons why a maritime oriented society would have more gouge and adze tools, but the gap between Maine and even southern New England is still more striking then might be explained by that maritime economy alone. My favorite tool forms, wish I lived in a area that produced that kind of yearly total....

Nice find! I have found a lot of Adzes here on the Pacific coast. A good amount are Humpback Adzes. Here is one of my most recent finds it's a decent size one and has a humped back. It still shows some polish found in a creek. I don't find gouges it could be because our canoes were made of tullies instead of wood.

The example I showed was definitely a rough draft.Adzes and gouges are designed out of various types of stone and degrees of workmanship...sometimes you just don't find the finished product..mjm

Yeah i have found some rough drafts as well. I trust your judgement on yours and can see with the other example you showed. I have another one about the same size as yours.
