Back on may the 18th of this year I went for my daily scouting drive in the central Sierra gold country. This particular area was one of the first mining districts in the state to be extensively mined. I saw a a flat ridgetop extending from the road next to a hydraulic pit overlooking the River. I parked my truck and walked about 100 yards while swinging the Deus. This area was swept by a devastating wildfire last fall and had burned any duff that covered the rocky subsoil. I caught the glimmer of gold and initially thought it was a bottle cap. As I bent over for a better look I saw the eagle and could not believe my eyes! I had just eyeballed an 1844 $5 gold piece! A spent the next 10 minutes in utter disbelief while while trying to pull myself together. It occurred to me I’d better search the area with a fine tooth comb. 5 feet away I dug an 1841 seated dime and couldn’t take anymore. It was the best birthday present ever and I was beyond grateful. Subsequent hunts to the area have revealed absolutely nothing. I should have posted much sooner but honestly forgot all about my treasurenet account.

The 18th is only 8 days ago. That should still count as a current find......and banner find. :icon_thumright:
I am with you on this!!
18th of May. This is Today’s Finds. Not Todays posts.
If a Admin or Moderator thinks it should be moved they can move it.

Still an awesome BANNER Find in my book!

Is there a mint mark on it?

That has to be one of the best photos one could ever see… an in situ gold coin—how often does that happen? Wow. I dream of it happening here.

Also, the anniversary of the Mt St Helens eruption...

At first glance, I thought that was how the coin had fallen after removing some soil- even more incredible that it was a surface find. Isn't often that an early Seated dime gets overshadowed! 32 years at it for me and still no gold coins, so yes indeed I'm very happy for you but envious at that same time- Congrats!!!!
