This is a mint error of some kind. How can it be so perfectly struck by someone without causing smearing around the definition of all the highlights? It would be Impossible no matter how careful someone was. MINT ERROR!

Good thing I wasted many hours collecting errors over the years! This looks to be a die clash. The two dies struck each other when there was no planchet in the machine. The dies left impressions on each other. When the next planchets were fed into the press this is what you would get. This is a heavy, heavy die clash... never seen one that strong and I had 100s of them over the years. Given the fact that this is so strong it might be worth some $$$$.

great find but is it me or are the jefferson imprints different profiles

Wow! Very interesting! As Vermontpakr says, get it authenticated/certified by ANACS or some other professional grading service. It will be worth the money to have this done, if it is in fact a mint error (as it occurs to be to this amateur!).

Thanks for sharing!

Question? In the second pic is the head of Jefferson Indented as it looks or is it raised under Monticello?

If it is raised I would for sure get this coin certified.

The mint will tell you it is common for a coin to get stuck in a bin and this coin may have been stuck in the bin. Resulting for the bin to be refilled with blanks and being dumped back into the press. On the second time this coin was restamped and your coin is the result.

This is a perfect example and could be worth a nice sum.

It IS NOT the product of someone pressing three coins together as that would produce reverse images and letters.
I do not think this is from a die clash as that would not produce low spots in the fields of the second stamp. Also the lettering is usually distorted.

My 2 cents
Joe

I'm leaning towards the clashed die explanation. I'm not sure about the reversing of the letters though,

The reversing of the letter is due to the dies striking each other, leaving letters we normally see on a coin, but then when the next coin is struck.. the letter are then reversed because they were struke the right way on the die since they had been right before. The dies are made as mirror images of the coins as we see them... so the the obverse die hits the reverse die leaving normal letters on the dies itself.. then the reverse die strike the coin.. leaving the reverse strike plus the mirror of the obverse die from the clash.

Hope I am explaining this clearly.. kind of hard to explain until you see it..

A picture is worth a thousand words.. soo.. this is a overlay of a wheat cent that shows how the die clash would appear on the coin.. as for value, that depends on how many there are. If the mint workers caught it early, then they would either sand out the die and keep using them or replace them. So there might be 100 or 10,000. This is a great example and looks like it was struck soon after the dies clashed so.. it might be worth something. I purchased a bunch and sold a bunch but done this good...

Hi everybody, here is 10 more photo I use photoshop edit the picture and add the arrow on the photo.
I got a reply from other wedsite, here is what he said:

Dear Turbo,

This appears to be a full die-clash error - the dies came together without a blank between them and impressed themselves on each other - this coin would have been one of the first to be struck on these dies which now contained an impression of the other side in addition to their own engraving.

There are many who collect error coins - i might recommend you go on ebay and see what wimilar pieces are selling for in shops and open auction. This will give you a more realistic view of its value than any catalog.

Good luck,

Mark
