5 in one hole...sorry, that IS a rare find...even to find one today is rare. Maybe this happened like in Crouchs book where the rebels captured these and stripped off the box plates. Seems in his book an early hunter found a spot after one of the early battles a good distance from the battlefield and founf like 50 in a small area. Great BANNER find. Congrats!

No one said it wasn't a rare find.

There not as rare as they used to be. :-\

They never were rare, but these days they are no doubt harder to find. So I guess it's how you define rare.

Great for the display case!

I'm sure that it was regarding this comment of yours

So what's your point? US box plates aren't rare. That doesn't make sense to you? It has nothing to do with how great a find it is.

I am thinking they are a rare find

Hi all

I see the enthusiasm and the joy in this thread.
Being from Europe, I am "completely unfamiliar" to these finds? :dontknow:
Would someone please be so good to explain me what these US box plates are, and why they are banner finds.
Are they very rare?

Thank you, and sorry for asking in an uneducated way ::) ;D

The Dane

Dane,
I'm by far not an expert and don't hunt Civil War sites but since nobody else jumped in I will take a shot. Guys if I'm wrong please correct me.

The 'US Box Plates' were used during the American Civil War (1861-1865) by the Union troops from the north. These plates were attached to the flap of cartridge boxes that were worn by the soldiers to hold ammunition. These plates as well as others such as breast plates were lost and/or removed to cut down on weight while marching. I've also heard they were removed since they made nice targets for the enemy. A shine brass plate will reflect the sun giving a soldiers location away. These lost and removed plates are sometimes discovered by detectorists. Although a US plate being found is not a rare find it is rare to find five all together. The 'CS Box Plates' from the confederate troops of the south are more rare then the US plates.

Okay...that was my best shot at explaining it...I hope it helps and if there are any errors someone will chime in.

It definitely is with maybe the exception of the old time relic hunters. Their stories are insane.

You could find a million dollar cache of memorial cents and it would be an incredibly rare find but doesn't mean each penny is rare. I can't believe there's a few people that just don't seem to understand this. Seems like too much detecting and not enough real world experience, or common sense, and I'm only wasting my time because I'm being quoted, and my words being spun into something they're not. I'd be over the moon if I came home with 5 plates of any kind! .... maybe even old dinner plates! (better than a Peter Rabbit spoon which seems like my last find of the year)

My friends actually found a cache of plates too, just over a year ago, and it was the find of a lifetime for them.... but that doesn't necessarily make each plate rare. (but the value was well into the thousands)

yo Dirt, thanks for the experiance of a life time, one i wont forget!! sorry about the black eye, but my busted up lip makes up for it!!

Great day! Cherish it!!!

AWESOME FIND DIRT DIGGLER!!!! im not going to try to stomp your find back into the dirt wish they were under my coil ! total CONGRATS on the box spill CONGRATS on the BANNER !! ENJOY THE HOBBY scott

You might want to check the area around where you found it to determine if what you're into was a hut site from a winter encampment. I was at a DIV a couple years back and one of the guys found what must have been the quartermaster's hut as he found a bunch (like more than 10) canteens stacked up together and a whole bunch of hat insignia clumped together. I'm thinking you just might have a resupply point there.

5 PLATES >:( ..........5 PLATES >:( I WOULD JUST LIKE TO FIND HALF OF ONE. nice find :notworthy:

You found nice treasure. Congrats. :icon_thumleft:
