I found this on a piece of property that I know was settled in the early to mid 1800's. House was torn down and current house was built in the 20's. The property is in the middle of the woods in Venango County, in northwest Pa. It has been abandoned since the 80's. This buckle was found at the base of a giant hemlock tree about 30 yards from the house. It was around 6 1/2" deep. As you can see there are no hooks or anything left on the back. I think it is made of brass. I am not knowlegeable at all when it comes to Civil War relics. Thank you.

Looks like a box plate. Would have been on an ammunition pouch. Looks authentic to me. Here is on so you can see the back.120214webcat-24.webp

Thank you Relic Nut. From what I did research, I was thinking the same thing. I just did not want to get my hopes up, no knowing anything about them. There is a cemetery about a quarter mile from this site with Civil War veteran's graves in it.

Thank you very much. I had a great day Sunday. Along with this buckle I found a silver watch fob (circa 1908), a Model T Ford nickel plated radiator cap, a very ornate brass gas light valve, a Schrams Automatic Sealer fruit jar (circa 1909), and a Keystone Registered fruit jar (circa 1900). Spent some time digging in the old dump for awhile in between medal detecting.
