This came as a shock when it popped out of the ground.

The 13th Census of the United States was conducted April 15, 1910, and was the first census conducted by the Census Bureau (established in 1902). A special badge was issued to aid enumerators in their work. The badge was to be worn when the enumerator was on duty. It did not take the place of their commission, but is an additional evidence of his authority to ask the questions required by the Census Act. After the census was complete, it could be retained as a souvenir.
