I have read that I should save all nickels that are pre 1965 but not sure what they are worth. I know the 42-45 are silver or war nickels but how about the other years?

Here is what I have found so far

1940 x2
1942 x2
1943
1944
1948
1950
1951
1953
1957 x4
1958 x3
1959 x2
1960
1963 x2
1964 x20

Can I take these to a local coin shop, put them on ebay, craigslist or just toss them in with the other coins?

A coin shop will not get you anything over face unless any are UNC. You can try to put them on ebay, wou may get some bidders. However, they are not really worth anything over face, unless the nickles are war nickles or 1950-D. I do keep pre-1960 nickles, but not later dates as 1964 nickles have the highest mintage of all nickles.

Thanks for the info. I will sit on them for a while before I decide if I will throw them back into rolls or save them.

If they were mine, I'd first attempt to sell them as one lot on Craig's List. If not successful there, I'd take their pics (both sides) and donate them to my local coin club after taking a note of their individual values.
(At least you'll then get the write off value as well as the satisfaction that some kid may be able to fill in a space or two in his coin book.)

I keep pre-60s. You will end up will lots and lots of '64s if you keep them all.
Probably the only ones worth keeping are the relatively low mintage ones.

if you ever pull up to a drive through at a mc donalds or a burgerking... the nickel on the ground or in your change is most likely going to be a 1964

1938-S and 39-S can bring a premium and always look for 39 Doubled Montecello and any 1939 with a 38 reverse steps. The 39 Montecello steps are sometimes "wavy", compared to the normal 1939 steps. Keep all full step examples since they're most valuable.
