Amazing story.
The confusion on pay to view stems from having an ad-blocker, which many people have on their browsers. Wired magazine's website (the OP's link) will allow you to browse their site without ads for a fee or you can turn off your ad-blocker and view it for free.
At any rate, this is a fascinating find and a sad testament to mankind's need to use nuclear weapons.
