I got a call from the Fiend early this morning while at the park and was notified that he was heading to the camp and that I was invited to tag along. Early on I managed the typical camp loot (slide, utensils, foil balls, rivets, nails, etc), and then we moved to another section of the camp where TF found his merc. I was jealous because all I had found in the way of coinage there was a 1967 memorial. Later, he showed me where he had been successful in finding some silver and buffs so we concentrated on that area. I dug a very iffy signal next to a tree, and from 6 inches came a worn but very sweet 1896 or 1898 (can't quite tell, even with the loupe...it's fairly smooth) V-nickel. I couldn't believe I had found it so immediatly I handed it to TF, thinking he was going to tell me it was a token of some kind. It was he who informed me it was dated pre-1900 so that was pretty friggin cool. That got me digging all kinds of iffy signals. I also picked up a 1939-D merc (a textbook signal for a 5-inch deep merc...I wish they all laid alone without iron nearby), and a 1945-D war nickel, and three wheats, 1919, and two 1929's (I thought one was a 1920 but it was in fact a 29). Also found was a cool 1944 United States Navy whistle and a vintage Cobra Commander action figure (G.I. Joe). Props to TF for visually researching the area and finding all of the relevant areas to hunt.

Until next time...

Sweet! Gonna wait until you guys clear that place out then go get the nails!

LowBatts,

Sorry, but we've been pulling a lot of the nails out, too. The place will be nailless soon. I'll leave some foil balls for you, those are fun.

Joe

Yep, they're putting in some new road and bike paths in my nearby park. Gonna be good for some Camp Deneen relics circa 1909. But it's like someone went through there with a nail spreader, or maybe the Illinois Nat'l Guard used nail guns back then? Today I think I got one of their fired rounds, an old .30-06 cal badly worn fired round. Last week got a web belt buckle.

Today also got a 1918 cent about 5" deep, looked like it's been in the ground that long, about a foot away got a zinc mem cent about 9" deep. Ah the bittersweet bounties of beepin'...

Great job bud, you killed me on my new spot!!! LOL
This is the only coin that I found...

Twistidd, Fiend - Congrats on a good hunt! All those coins look great to me!

It amazes me to see all the great stuff you guys are still pulling outta there - as hard as it's been hit by everyone.

Good job guys! those finds look good and silver is always welcome :icon_pirat:

It was funny, as soon as he showed me what he found, I knew it was Cobra Commander (thats how big of a nerd I am)!!! LOL

I don't have my camera, so here's a blurry scan of the G.I. Joe action figure:

Nice v nickel twistidd. When I found that one earlier this year it was an iffy signal too . Nickels are tough but at least you know that people hung out there back then and what the deep nickels sound like on your machine. Go back after it rains and you should be able to get more of those deep iffy signals. Dig 'em all and good luck.
