Detector(s) used
Tesoro Vaquero
I just got my Vaquero and I still have to learn the ground balance, but for now I have a few questions (I have read the manual).

I was wondering why "All Metal" had a different audible sound, besides to differentiate the two on Pinpoint mode. I used the notch after Iron for most of my hunt today and it seemed to work out well for me.

I remember reading on here if I ignore tabs I will miss gold. This is part of the reason I set the discrimination the way I did (plus I want nickels). From what the manual says, I gather that descrimination at Max will lose cents, but is that all cents, or only the zinc ones?

What do you folks set sensitivity at? I set mine to about 7-10 and it seemed ok there.

If the detector is not in All Metal how do you adjust the Threshold and ground balance, is it by going back to All Metal?

Sorry for so many of these questions. The only thing I wish the detector had was an adjustable volume. I knew it did not before buying, and this is such a minor thing. All in all, this detector seems very promising and I am happy to have purchased it.

I used a Vaq for 2 years, good detector. Setting the Disc knob at the pre-set marker is OK. All Metal will sound different from Disc, less circuitry is being used, detects deeper too. The pinpoint button is all metal circuitry. You can't disc out copper pennies, dimes, quarters but zincs will. Sensitivity at 7 - 10 is OK. Set the Threshold while in All Metal, to barely hear it or make it as loud as you want. Threshold can't be heard in Disc mode but it does affect the signal loudness in Disc mode. Set the ground balance while in All Metal mode for most accuracy. Raise and lower the coil to see if it detecting the soil (should be silent), no detection /rejection of soil is wanted. Get good earphones with volume control. I have 4 detectors, non with volume control, my phones vol control needs to be re-adjusted for each detector.

You have a very good detector in the Vaquero and after a couple times setting the ground balance you'll wonder what the big deal was as it is easy once you do it. You can start with Sens. at preset and in some areas you can turn it up or down. Experience can help you with this for where you hunt. Max sens. is not the best for max depth as it is more unstable then when in bad ground.
The best way to decide how your detector disc out targets where your hunting is to lay down different targets and move the coil over each while adjusting the disc knob. 90% of the gold rings will respond where pull tabs are. There are many types of pull tabs and gold rings so it is not all cut an dry.
As for volume it is best to get high quality headphones with vol control. Grey Ghost, Killr Bee's, Black Widow are some of the best. I use Black Widows myself. It is best to visit a dealer to try various ones on for comfort too.
Good Luck,
Sandman

Thank you both for the help. I can't wait to get out there again and find a full pouch of goods.
