My finds from yesterday's hunt with the deus. I can't find my variety or back quality mark for my NY excelsior button in the tice book so I'm pretty sure its a rare variety. I'm thinking it dates to the early 1800s. There's more good finds in the video. HH coop

Pardon me if you already know some or all of the following info:
Your brass 1-piece NY State Militia "Excelsior" (emblem inside an oval) button is a variant of button NY-10 in the Albert book and NY-100 in the Tice book. They were made sometime between 1816 and 1829, primarily by Joseph Mann in Birmingham England, who is the only listed MANUFACTURER of them (not merely an importer or dealer, like Thomas Potts or Lewis & Tomes).

William Leigh's website shows several of the NY-10/NY-100 variations, including one with the same backmark as yours (but the eagle's wingtip doesn't touch the letter E, like yours does), listed as button US-108. Click on the photo to see the button's back. Go here:

Wow! Only buttons I find around here are the ones that pop off my pants when I bend down to dig. Beautiful shape for being 200 yrs old.

Thanks CannonballGuy all the info from alberts and Tice I already had but the button on William Leigh's site is almost identical to mine and I knew nothing about it. I see the one he has listed also doesn't have the rope border like mine. I know mines not a high dollar button is just not a variety Ive found before. Thanks again for the help. HH coop
