In the past 2 weeks (approximately 8-10 boxes), I have not found 1 silver half dollar. I am on the East Coast where the silver is "plentiful". I pickup from BoA (Loomis) - what is going on?? Anyone else having a major skunk streak?

Wondering if I should try another bank..

I've never heard of anyone having a skunk streak ever. especially not on the east coast. silver is everywhere

i feel your pain, i am in the same boat.

So do you keep hammering away or lay off for a month? I am picking up 6 boxes on Friday.. If I hit all skunks, I may try searching another Bank.

east coast is a relative term.

the most silver will be in the immediate areas around the oldest consistently settled metropolis areas, east coast has the advantage of the -P- mint being the oldest. think NYC, boston, etc.

The bottom line though is you have to hit a vein and that requires searching multiple banks at high volume. If you are only sourcing BofA or any "1 bank" you are majorly hamstringing yourself to begin with.

Don't get hung up with the supplier either - in major cities armored carriers DO NOT co-mingle bank chains supply in their cash vaults. If they order from the fed then it will be co-mingled to some degree but that also encompasses banks that ship to the fed which could include estate dumps.

I don't know what everyone means by "plentiful". I ended a 36 box skunk streak with one silver, then started a new 9 box skunk streak.

I know what a bummer it is when you are on a skunk streak. I'm also on the East coast. Roughly where on the East coast are you? After a lousey summer, I have hit a silver vein with my pickup bank. They use Brinks as their coin supplier. I use Capital One Bank & get 4 boxes a week. I will be posting my last 10 boxes shortly. Just keep plugging away. Good luck with your next boxes. You never know what they will bring.

I am on a 33 box skunk streak with halves.

I decided to start working dimes a few weeks ago, and worked $1800+....all total skunks too.

I don't think I would ever get to 20 or 30 boxes of straight skunk without first changing banks for a while. I am around 10 now, and this is starting to get really old. My largest streak back in NM was maybe 6 or so in a row..

Having multiple banks is a good idea - the problem is my location. It is terrible with traffic, etc. That is why I have only stuck to one bank for now, but if I do not see things change I may just suck it up and find another.

The nice thing about LA (even though we have traffic as well) is that the banks tend to cluster so its very easy to hit multiple bank chains in small loops.

I would strongly urge you to try to pickup from 2+ banks per week instead of just 1. I am adding my 4th pickup bank to the rotation this thursday.

I am assuming that having 5 bank accounts does not effect our credit in any way?

I am currently experiencing a major skunk streak as well. In the last 3 weeks I've done 34 boxes of halves with only 3 containing any silver. 10 keepers total. I am going to hit the halves hard next week, 40 boxes, and if I get similar results I will change banks or move to dimes. I'm in PA so seeing everyone post about greatfinds on the east coast is discouraging since I'm not getting the same results.

I don't think so its just a soft inquiry most of the time.

biggest thing for your credit is paying your bills on time and what % of the card limit you carry as a balance, less than 30% of your credit limit is ideal. Once you go above that your "risk" level rises to the FICO con squad.

It absolutely does. For whatever reason, opening and closing accounts effects your credit score. Even cancelling a credit card that you never used once will lower your credit score. I dunno why or to what extent, but it does.

Credit card is completely different than a bank account.

Part of your FICO score is determined by credit history and by cancelling old cards you are effectively erasing your credit history from the next FICO calc, its bologna and unfair but thats the way it is.

I did a little googling now and the only reason a bank would do a "Hard" inquiry aka a real credit check is if you are getting overdraft protection on an account in the form of "plastic" and not transferring from a attached savings account.

How much you keep in your checking acct has no effect on credit score, the only thing will effect it from your checking account is if you start bouncing a bunch of checks , go negative/ delinquent and the bank reported it.

I don't think that opening 5 accounts matters, however the article did say that if you had frequent opening / closing of accounts for incentives that can negatively impact you. I would say the effect is minimal if anything for "soft inquiries".

Heres a generic link with some basic answers that I referenced

I wouldn't even get checks/debit card. I don't think it affects our credit based on what I have read in the last hour.

I am in PA as well. I dont know any crazy volume, just 4 boxes of halves and 2 boxes of dimes per week.

Dimes pretty much always produce and i never have a problem, but lately the Halves have been very slow. Anywhere from 0 to 3 silvers/box. And they are always 40% never 90. This is from 2 different banks, so its both Strings rolls and Brinks, so i am not really sure whats going on.

I did a bunch of research on this when I started the hobby and opened 3 additional accounts in support thereof.

Bottom line is that if there is a credit component to the banking products that you elect (overdraft protection, bank issued credit card, etc), then the bank does do a credit inquiry and that counts against your FICO score even if you don't do business with the bank. If you do open those accounts, the average age of your open accounts goes down as a result and that counts against your score. The credit limit associated with those products count toward increasing your score, but doesn't offset the hits against it.

If there are no credit components to the banking products that you select, none of those considerations apply.

Frivolous Opening/Closing of accounts, NSF events, and other bank-customer relations are reflected in a reporting agency known as ChexSystems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChexSystems). It is looked at only by banking institutions and only for deposit type accounts (not credit accounts). So, you should be a bit mindful of your habbits to protect your ability to change banks in the future, but don't worry about your FICO score.
