Victorian 4th kings of own regiment button…

Well I got off work and had just enough daylight to give the yard another go I found the Royal artillery button yesterday. The temperature dropped to -5 and I was in a thin damp hoody but I pushed on. I had some luck with some relics, 2 silver dimes and another military button. This time it was a Victorian era 4th kings own regiment big dome button. Unfortunately just like everything else that comes out of that yard it’s in pretty bad shape. The soil just kills the finds. I can’t resist going back because of the age of finds but it’s super annoying at the same time. The last one I dug exactly like it was in 2014 I believe. Thanks for looking and maybe stuck to the shorelines the next time I go! 😁👍

Good button. Looks to me like the backmark is “P.TAIT (possibly followed by '& CO' or ‘& COMPANY’ or ‘& SON’) LIMERICK” [Ireland]. He was a major supplier to the British army in the 1850’s-1870s.



Tait won his first clothing contract to supply the British army following the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854, producing around 120,000 uniforms between 1856-1858 from premises on Edward Street. He also had another factory in London near Blackfriars Railway Bridge. He retired from the business and left Limerick for good around 1875 leaving the factory to be run by his son, who then renamed it “The Auxiliary Forces Clothing and Equipment Company.”

[From December 1863 onwards Tait also had contracts for uniforms with the Confederate Government for issue to the Army of Northern Virginia, the Army of Tennessee, the Garrison Units along the East Coast and a separate contract with the State of Alabama from June 1864. He used his own ships to run the blockade numerous times until the fall of Fort Fisher on January 15th 1865.]
