I have been interested in metal detecting for along time, just haven't made the jump. I need advice on what metal detector to buy, I would like to start off with something my wife will not reject because of price, but I don't want to be disappointed once I learn what I am doing. I live in Garland and would like suggestion where to go or even help getting started. I am home for a month and I go away to work for a month so I would have a lot of time when I am home.

I would recommend you join a metal detecting club in your area. It is a great way to get started and get help from some real experienced guys. There is a club in either Mesquite or Garland.

I have started with a Garrett ACE 250 which is about $215. It is light and easy to learn. You will probably get some ideas from others, but I wanted one that I could easily learn on my own. I wouldn't recommend the ACE 150 as it doesn't do anywhere as much as the 250.

When you start, make it easy. Bury some coins in your own yard to see how your machine acts when you find them. Then detect your whole yard. Learn how to dig a plug correctly to protect the grass. Youtube has tons of videos that you can learn from. Another easy place to start is a playground with wood chips or gravel. Then you can move on to park areas. Be sure to fill all of your holes and take all the trash you dig. Helps when someone questions you to show how you are cleaning up the place!

Happy Hunting!

Since you live right there in Garland, Garrett Metal Detectors is located at 1881 W. State Street. I recommend the Ace 250 also.

Ace 250 is a good choice.

Thanks, for the information. When I get home this time i will stop by Garrett Metal Detectors and check it out.

The 250 would be a good choice. You are more than welcome to visit our club meeting in Mesquite when your in town. Meetings are the first Tue of each month. We have members that work at Garrett's and some that are retirered from Garrett's.

I will not be home for May but I will show up for the June meeting. Thanks for the invite.

I took all of your advice and I purchased an Ace 250 Pro package with two extra coils (9X12 & 4.5). It should be at the house a week after I get home on the 20th, enough time to be full of questions by the June meeting.

Thanks again!
