War of 1812 Button WOW! Check out the "AFTER" Picture!!

I got out for a couple hours yesterday to my new favorite field...same field I found the two old shoe buckles the past couple weeks. I stuck to a part of the field I hadn't hunted before and didn't have very high hopes for...high in the field and close to the road. The first target was a first for me and something I've been looking for since I started detecting. Ramrod guide. Nothing special I know but I love digging musket parts and this is one that can now be crossed off the list. Second target was just a couple feet from the ramrod guide and was a War of 1812 Royal Fusiliers 7th Regiment of Foot officer's button...another one to cross off the list. It's actually in much better condition than the pictures show. Lot's of other targets but these two stand out!

Yeah, I remember that...yours had some gilt left on it didn't it?

Silver, and it did, but only after cleaning because it wasn't until he got home did he realize he might have something.

I just finished cleaning mine and it's the difference between night and day! All the words are now easily readable with a ton of gold gilt...

I'll post a pic tomorrow...my home camera is still out of commission so I'll have to take a pic at the office.

After my post above saying the Patriot's is silver, I did a quick search and seen a later one with gilt, and now that you say your button is gilt... that's sort of strange. Can you read the makers mark on yours?

I can make out 95% of the maker's mark...

"Birmingham Reginton & Co." I'm not 100% sure of the "Reginton"...the first letter is obscured but all the others are clear. It may even be "F. Eginton". What say you?

Definitely different than mine. Will have to try and date that one and see how it compares. Not too common for a Regiment to use both silver and gilt during the same time frame. What's more strange is the VII pattern not in my book, and what's even stranger than that is a local digger here wrote me today asking about the Royal Fusiliers button with the VII.... and it had nothing to do with this find or thread. I haven't even talked to this guy in months.

Re: War of 1812 Button and a First

I can't find any info on the maker's mark. After studying it I am now reasonably sure that it is "Birmingham F. Eginton & Co." Does that sound right?

Yes, Birmingham as in the place. F. Eginton & Co. Birmingham

Never heard of that mark, but am only familiar with the most common.
