Warranted fine gold surface? UPDATED W/ PIC

Was out today and found what looks like some kind of button. One side is smooth and the other has "warranted fine gold surface" on it in gold writting. It has a sun shine in the middle with a ding in the middle looks like something may have worn off.
I found a post about it on the old tnet forum:

It's the size of a penny but thicker and heaver.
Anyone found one or know what it may be?

Sounds like an early 19th century civilian button. "Warranted Fine Gold Surface" is what's called a quality mark and refers to the button's gilt finish.

Yep! The shank/eye of the button would have been in the center of the sun or sunburst. Neat backmark.
