When I look at the front it reminds me of some type
of Musical reed.

Very intresting look whatever it is.

It looks like it would attach to a similar piece to kinda form a "V" look from the front side. I'd say the belt would run though the bigger loop and the clasp on the opposite piece would either have a backward version of the "J clasp" or a smaller loop to hook it together.

It doesn't look particularly thick, so I would sayit would hold up something lighter in weight. But then again, the belt loop part looks like it could hold up a mid weight item.

Or, I could be totally wrong :P

I'm mystified. Sorry!

Good call, Wildrider!

It appears to be half of a two-piece dress buckle, maybe 1920's-30's. The complete buckle would have looked something like this:
